And then the monthly bill came and you realized that you were fucked -- In 1993 AOL charged $9.95 for 5 hours of access per month plus $3.50 per each additional hour. It was not unusual to have AOL bills exceeding 250 dollars a month.

I recall reading some years ago that Beta was actually the superior technology, better fidelity, etc., but that VHS had better PR and more financial backing, or something to that effect. Basically, VHS was able to buy its way into the superior position and stayed there, until eventually being replaced by DVD. Speaking of, do you remember those big ass platters the preceded DVD? About the size of a 33rpm record? Can't remember what they were called and don't feel like searching right now. They were supposed to be a better tech at their time as well, but didn't make it for similar reasons. They remind me of the platters that were put on the Voyagers with info about Earth - may have been the same basic tech, but the platter wasn't made entirely of gold.

Beta was superior and was replaced by VHS through their marketing expertise, multi-media production houses continued using beta for at least a decade after the battle was lost because of it's superiority.. Those big platters were called LaserDiscs Although the format was capable of offering higher-quality video and audio than its consumer rivals, VHS and Betamax videotape, LaserDisc never managed to gain widespread use in North America. This was largely due to the high cost of the players and their inability to record TV programs. Initially the players cost about 750 dollars -- i bought one at a garage sale for 40 bucks about 15 years ago - it still worked but I only had 2 movies to play on it.

What site did you use? One or two that I tried wouldn't save or wouldn't allow me to do it without a subscription. You can see that the bottom one (done on the site many of us use,

), actually added the trail of tumbleweeds - the normal .gif just shows a single moving along - I'll probably go back and redo the roll-in with that longer version at some point, but wanted to find a site which allowed me to remove the background without subscribing.

The top one was done on another site, but left the black background and actually cut off the last slide, which is fine because it showed half the weed on one side and half on the other and I was going to either have to eliminate it myself, or pull the slide, edit it directly, and then reinsert it.

EDIT: When I saved them off, I saw you used ezgif, which I tried to used to make it transparent, but it wasn't working for me. It has a couple of different settings to try to do it, but I guess I hit the wrong combination of checkboxes or prompts - I just never got it to actually be "transparent" in the background. I noticed you could enter an RBG or Hex, but is there one for "transparent" - leaving it blank didn't work, and the other choices seemed to assume the background was either black or white (though not what shade...), but still wouldn't work for me.

When I remake the longer version, I'll go back there and do the transparency bit after I've gotten the "no repeats" rolling head going right, so if you can DM me a screen of what boxes you checked/entries you made when you get a chance, that would be terrific. Thanks!

I don't think I was trying it on this particular .gif, but another that may have had a background not exactly black or not exactly white, so that could have been the problem. Maybe it only works (for free, at least) on one of those two colors.

I rented a room from a guy who had two golden retrievers. We kept the place clean and vacuumed. I moved out because he was selling the house, and when we picked up the carpet runner near the front door, we saw his eggshell carpet was actually white. It just had golden hairs interwoven into it everywhere else. So yea, not selling the house with that carpet.

I haven't tried it myself but it looks like it has an option for non black and white backgrounds. you can easily find the hex code on some sites or editing programs so that shouldn't be too hard
unless the background is multiple colors, in which case

I think it was a multi, so , yeah - problem. Maybe you have to do it one color at a time.

I did the lurking thread to grind for + , then attempted to stay social but got the shits when a thousand deputy moderators got their newly minted badges and threw their weight around ( might be “exaggerated for clarity) spent the next 200 days banking interest off a low base… I was on the old one… 4000 pages on this new one?
