Hot take - every game should have an "unlock gallery and replay" option.

What are your thoughts on gallery and replay unlocks?

  • I do not like gallery or replay unlocks at all and think they should never be included.

First: all games should have gallery and replay options, full stop. No exceptions. There's nothing more annoying than having to try and remember what part of a long game had the scene you want to replay and having to have thirty seven different save locations to try and find it again.

Second: all galleries and replays should be able to be unlocked manually by players if they just don't want to play through the story mode any longer.

Third: If you mouse-over or click on an "locked" gallery or replay location it should hint to you what you need to do to unlock it. "This path requires Izzy Love of 10+" or "To unlock this scene try and spend more time with Laura" or whatever.
 
Then you are a person of culture and taste. I have been in this argument with people for years.
I can see some people complaining about unlocking the gallery early but why anyone would be against a replay option?

definitely not a hot take, creators are usually either just too lazy to put a gallery or paywall it
 
Its not a "hot take" at all. We all agree to that, it should be the standard. Like opacity for the dialogue box, and a "skip already seen". These are minimal QOL upgrades that all VN/VN games should have, and many non VN games too.

The argument I got from somebody is that a replay gallery out of context of the game eliminates the narrative tension and does not carry the same meaning when viewed that way.

As if it were Citizen Kane or something.

That would only be of some merit, if the whole gallery was unlocked at the beginning and people would watch whose instead of playing the game first.
But it's still a stupid argument, because nobody forces someone to use the gallery.

Sameish reasoning: A game dev had cheats in his game and some complained that this makes the game to easy.

If there were truly a bright path it'd be to unlock any scene once it's unobtainable. If you miss a trigger or pick path b instead of a put the unexplored into an "alternate world" gallery or something.
 
I would say that it would be great if there was an unlock gallery everywhere. I usually use it before the starting the game to see if I will like the animations and style of the game.
 
Yeah not putting it in is just due to lack of resources or being lazy
 
I'm not a gallery user so it's no difference to me.
I guess there's a little extra testing and code a dev has to add to set up the gallery but the code on top of that for unlocking should be trivial.
Seems like there's modders out there who can enable it anyway if a dev won't/
 
I don't care about galleries or replays at all. I just save in the key/interesting moments of the game.
 
Gallery is less interesting than replay to me; I too think that an option to easily replay scenes should be mandatory for ANY game..

Some games have only very few truly hot scenes; with no way to properly replay them.. it's a pain.. and it sucks having to make a save point before any interaction just in case lol
 
Perhaps a description could at least be available for such locked content on how to unlock them? There was a game that did this, but I'm blanking on which one.
Aside from that I do like the option of revealing missed content, especially if multiple paths are possible (I might not want to go down every lane, but I'd still be curious about the sexy scenes).
 
Honestly through years and years of playing AVN's who either didn't have one or had one but you had to mod it in I just got used to saving everytime (assuming I like the character) a scene "starts" (so not necessarily animations). I don't really care for it, I rarely go into a game to click on the gallery and look at a scene. Usually I play through the game once, might revisit (WHILST still playing it) a scene or two but that's about it.

I will say this though; galleries which do NOT include the DIALOGUE and just throw 2 animations at you and that's it are fucking awful. Which is another reason why I usually just reload a save right before a scene rather then going into the gallery. Another reason why I don't check the gallery (only after I'm done with the game/content) is to not be spoiled. Some games only put in 3 scenes or so after two updates (just saying random numbers here) and it's fucking AWFUL to play a game and realise wait.. this is scene number 3.. FUCK! No more scenes after this?! Which results in me being super demotivated. I do peek in changelogs sometimes to see if devs put shit in (some do updates without scenes, just fixing stuff or whatever) but opening up a gallery fresh after a download to only see 2 (sometimes 1) "locked" scene is really shit. It's weird I know but it does affect me if I know I'm on the LAST scene of the update when you are getting in the mood (or booting it up, realising that you already hit the end pretty much which then turns into, ok fuck these last 5 minutes of dialogue I'll just go look for something else to play).
