I'm usually very critical of music rankings for obvious reasons and since history is one of my interests I tend to look at those rankings with an "historical" eye.
To make an example, if you rank bass players (a random choice, of course) by popularity within the general public, Flea would probably hit top three.
If you ask bass players, anyone below 30/35 years old will have Victor Wooten as undisputed number one. But neither Flea nor Victa would be the musicians they are today without Marcus Miller, Stanley Clarcke and Larry Graham.
I don't know I managed to explain myself.
I agree... I'm more of a layman when it comes to bass players, but when I talk to musicians about it, I see the same opinion as yours... I totally understand.
Not to mention those who have remarkable riffs that influenced many not only because of their skill, but in an inspiring way. Bernard Edwards if I remember correctly?
It's really hard.
On a totally unrelated subject, P4 is detrimental to my backreading duties...🙁😅

Hi Algeo -- gotta be careful with gifs like that -- a lot of cat folk around here

There was a Creepypasta some years back of Alien from the cat's point of view. He fought it that it ran away, and it doing so kept it from taking in more of the ships metal, which would have made it unstoppable.

Time to set off too

Bernard Edwards was one half of Chic (the other being guitarist Nile Rodgers). They basically made whole generations dance (Rogers is still alive and you can find his name behind a lot of modern hits).
But, IMHO, while with guitar is almost impossible to find a number one (Django? Les Paul? Hendrix? Van Halen?), with electric bass, being such a young instrument, you can point your finger at James Jamerson, the man behind every single Motown hit. From Diana Ross to the Jacksons. He influenced literally everyone.

I feel like a 5 years old in toy store the day before Christmas. I don't know where to look.

a woman is standing in front of a sign that says hello everyone

Whew! What a cold ass day it was outside!
a woman wearing a furry hat is standing in the snow and says `` i 'm freezing my tits off '' .

Did a little back reading before posting. Prepare for a quote wall! Only did a few pages of quotes though.
a woman is smiling with her eyes closed and saying `` you 're welcome . ''

every time i hear "ai will never" i cringe. like do you genuinely believe this? why would it never?
like even studying to become a virlogist isn't safe because the mantels/intelligence side can be done by the ai, and manual labour can be done by a random human.
AI is a huge pain in my ass (even more than conzi!), but it is adding complexity to my work-life. I'm sure it will progress, and that's quite scary. Right now, I only go to AI for problems I can't solve using other tools, because it gives me a wrong answer more often than it does the right one, but give them a few more years, and I bet it will be scarier. I'd never use the phrase "ai will never" but I'm hoping it doesn't accomplish it before I choose to retire. I'd hate a world controlled by AI. They take too many dissociated facts and draw false conclusions right now. So, at least I have a job for now!

I didn't have any coffee, since I don't drink it. :p
Slum! What, no coffee?

a picture of a robot with the words what did you just say heathen in sight below it

Yeah, I enjoy those kinda games, have a lot of hours in Diablo/Grim Dawn, just haven't tried PoE, so thought maybe jump in with the new one. :p
I haven't done a first person shooter since playing Doom/Hexen (yeah, that shows my age a little). I enjoy turned based stuff mostly (really loved BG3), but have considered trying something new. If I were to try something new, what would you suggest?

Happy saturday, beautiful ppl! Enjoying the weekend so far?
It's smashing. I've had a bit of a cold, but still managed to have a good day outside. But now feeling it. I should have probably rested inside, but had stuff to do.

Hello everyone. Hope your weekend is off to a great start! 💕
Algeo! Nice to see you!

Okay, I'm not quite that long in the tooth, but the scene you show in Transformers was amazing.

She should have used this for everything it was worth.

I don't know anything about bass players but feel what you're laying down. I hear people talking about lead guitarists and drummers and the like and it really seems like they don't hold a candle to musicians in bands that I've admired over my years, and those were no doubt influenced by others before them. I have my own slice of history that seems most relevant, but it's just the slice that I'm familiar with.

What people do not realize is that western (not Country and western) music has only 12 notes at its disposal and the rules to use them limit your choices even more.
A very technical youtuber I follow just devoted a 10+ minutes video to the phrase caught in the middle and why there is only one way to sing it, both rhythmically and melodically. All that to say that people who disparages your favourite bands, listen to people who play the same things, maybe just faster and with different sounds/vibes.

I don't know a lot about music in the technical sense, but admire those who do. I listen to music, and sometimes it just speaks to me. There are some things that just give me shivers. For guitar, David Gilmour can do that to me. Does do that to me. I'm not able to clarify why I think a musician is special, just that their work means something to me. For drummers, perhaps Neil Pert or John Bonham. I don't know enough about music to say with certainty that any one musician is among the best. I'll leave that to you and others that know more about the topic.

Good point on the age having an impact on rankings -- mine for bassists starts with Bruce, Kaye and Mingus and most modern "kids" don't even know who they are
