Why refuse to play games not made with Renpy?

I too prefer Ren'Py because mainly QoL features (rollbacks, mods, autotext, save system), and I would like to highlight as others said Linux compatibility (although some developers do not compile for Linux, it can even work nicely using Wine).

Also, I play on an integrated graphics AMD 2021 laptop, perfectly capable of running Cyberpunk and Elden Ring on low-mid quality. Yet, to date, no Unity or Unreal AVN has been able to deliver more than 5 fps on low quality. Developing games, even Ren'Py ones, is hard, and the lack of optimization in AVN using more complex engines is astounding, but something I can understand given the team sizes.

Then, and this is my personal opinion, the other engines tend to be used to produce games that do not respect my time. Gatchas, meandering RPGs, pointless mini-games, idle clickers and so on...
 
using potato laptop with linux inside, renpy stuff usually works without surprises, unity/rpgmaker usually not work or they are crap, html games are cursed by design
 
It is painfull to adapt to different controls for each games after renpy goodness. Also android support is always nice bonus, even if devs did not provide apk i can run it.
 
So I've seen many replys to posts from people saying that they wont play a game unless it's made with Renpy, or "this game isnt even made with Renpy, eew! not playing!!". But I was wondering why specifically wont you play it?

I just curious, like is it your experience with cashes on other Engines (like Unity, for example). or is it so you can edit the files for yourself? etc?

For me, for example, if I just want to have a good story experiance then it doesn't matter to me what it was created with, as long as it is intuitive to play and has a good story/visuals that I expected from it. 🙂

ps. I am looking to make a VN in the future (just planning right now), and i have experience in Renpy, Unreal and Unity.. so I just wanted to get a general feel for what people expect or if any one really does care about what engine it was created in.
i for one detest Unity cause:
1. i've got an ultrawide monitor - and fullscreen gets zoomed in so much that most games just plain break, buttons move off screen etc.
2. 9/10 times the sensitivity is bonkers high without options to change it.
3. cant rebind hotkeys for load/save/skip etc..
4. I literally can't stand rolling text and forced hard pauses you cant get past. (like, maybe i dont want to look at your awful "animation" looping every2 sec for 30 sec?)
i could go on, but those are the main ones.
Being able to fix coding bugs easily yourself is a big plus for ren'py too, its simple and open, and since its mostly typos' and missing variables that break games, you can fix it yourself and continue - rather than having to wait for the dev to patch things.

TL;DR -> It's all about ease of use, ren'py is easy and fast.
 
As some others have mentioned ren'py takes the cake for me due to almost always working regardless of OS. There were quite a few unity games that just would not work for me on linux no matter what I tried and that gets annoying real fast.
 
I prefer renpy because of rollback and skip but I also want CLEAR text boxes! I'm not against other engines as long as they have skip and rollback. Its just a quality of life thing.

And RPGmaker is just shit and not good at all for adult games. And most devs who use it aren't good.
 
Finally good to see people voice opinions I've also had for a while. Don't get me wrong, I'd love a great, fully-fleshed out, fantastic-looking, smooth-running 3D sex game. I've played tons of games in all sorts of engines, a few of which I've even enjoyed. The key to is for things to be interactive to make it a fun 3D-engine game.

But I'm here for the fap first and foremost, with scenes as a flavor or context setter. Ren'Py does this. Easy, skippable, lightweight, versatile. Sure, some devs suck at coding. Some devs really suck at coding. That's not Ren'Py's fault. Leave Ren'Py alone!

Sometimes devs think they're clever by hiding some of the default features like skipping or rollback. Console commands easily fix those "oversights". If a Ren'Py game is too grindy, console commands and variable sniffers find and change the necessary values. I tolerate some story elements at the beginning just to settle into the world a bit, but when dick is in hand, things don't go as planned :ROFLMAO:
 
Renpy is mostly a goto for me and others are more and more a nogo. As i have many systems (Windows Workstation, MacBook, iPad) im my household and have a shared folder for all the systems it got for me pretty convenient to set up Renpy games on a localy shared folder and then switch between the devices to go further in the story (e.g. ended my workload on my Windows Worksation... starting the game... later sitting on the couch.. going further on the MacBook.. then when the Renpy game makes it possible on the iPad in Bed while going to sleep or when beeing on travel. It is very "customizable" to adapt it to your behaviours without having it completly online by the risk compromising your privacy. Other approaches are restricted to either one platform or very complex in setting it up.

I don't like HTML games and I have not found an RPGM that I like yet. One of my favourite games is made on Unity. If you mean VN, I like renpy because it has rollback in case I miss something I can scroll up and reread it. I don't think I've ever seen a truly complete game in unreal engine.
 
Because of problems with save slots. It's hard to navigate if game have numerous routes.

From a security standpoint, I trust Renpy more than Unity/others. Plus lower system requirements and they behave much better in virtual machines.

As long as you are downloading the .exe. You are not really getting a lot of benefits security wise; if any. Unless I'm missing something. Using a VM is safer though.
 
I agree with a lot of the reasons already given here.
  • Being able to easily run it on different operating systems is great.
  • I dont use the exe's to run the games, I run them with the renpy development tools so I can modify or fix as needed. it also means lowered security risk that way. Though nothing is definitely certain to be 100 percent safe.
  • Easy to unpack the code to see how the game is put together.
  • .. which also makes it possible to homemake mods.
  • Familiarity with the usual interface so dont need to learn a new thing with every game.
  • Developers have to go out of their way to make the interface work unusual so most leave it as normal.
TLDR: Familiar, trusted, open.
