Well, I was about to buy one in 2020 with all the time we had to spend home, but it was out of stock for over a year. Then I was like "hmm, Switch 2 should be there soon, I'll wait" ... and I still am

But hey, they officially announced, that they will announce their next console (not officially Switch 2 yet) before march 2025 (will be march 2025)
At worst, should be out late 2026, but I do have hopes for a late 2025 release !

Late 2025 will be. Announcent made right before the end of the fiscal year (stock going up, investors happy), six months advertising campaign, release (with a new main Mario title?) just before holyday season. It doesn't makes sense to wait any longer. The leaks on the console capabilities are already happening.

Just for those not in the know: Summertime Saga gest something like $70.000 every month. Definitely enough to hire some proper programmers, even experienced game developers, to turn his almost complete game into a normal Ren’py game with minigames.

I’d have to research the exact details, but afaik to actual timeline was something like this:

Oct 2020 the last normal update happened and "work" on the tech update started.
Jun 2021, due to the longer-than-anticipated pause, a small update of the old version is released. This happens roughly every 9(?) months from then on while, presumably, the main focus of a team of developers is the code-improvement.

2024 The mods finally decide to declare the game abandoned. DarkCookie quickly announces that the tech update is almost there, finally, after four years of development.
2024 ~June: A tiny preview of the game, including just the first game day and two character routes, is released. Many features of the game are missing. Fans are furious. DarkCookie announced that every ~4 months another update will come out. (Three of the smaller routes have been added so far, as well as stuff like "Enabled most of the NPCs usually found at and around the college" [formerly school]

At this rate, supporters will have paid ~4 million Dollars and waited ~5 years when the tech update is actually complete and normal updates can resume.

Well there is a point where supporters get what they deserve and also a point where I am like damn he hassling these rich horny fools and respect him for it a bit.

Darkcookie is still doing public art-streams for potential future updates of the game, afaik.

AFAIK, Star Citizen indeed simply needs that much money for development, actually.

Their issue, as I see it, is that they promise tech that is 5-10 years in the future. Which in turn means that they have to develop, and keep developing, revolutionary new technology every year. Which takes a lot of (expensive) highly skilled developers a lot of time. After a few cycles of that, the rest of the world has caught up, and Star Citizen starts a new hype cycle for the next update.

If you look at how many hundreds of millions of Dollars AAA games cost these days, now imagine if they were actually building new standards for their games instead of making the next game in a franchise.

The end goal of Star Citizen seems to be a fully immersive universe simulator. Given how many things there happen to be in a universe, they can burn up all the money they get on developers, then double that, and have endlessly more to spend.

Their latest endeavour is a full movie with well-known actors, filmed entirely within the game world, as far as I know. It’s a big hole, and it fits a lot of money. On the bright side, it is already a very pretty hole, so if you are satisfied with the current state, you may well get your money’s worth.
