What do you guys think about "parody" games?

The real problem with parody games is that if you're not familiar with the source material, a lot of the humor can fall flat, or at least not be as funny. It really takes a good writer to still reach those who are unfamiliar.

Yep, narrows the target audience, yet if it's not done right you will lose the hardened fan of what is parodied.

Some are decent, but many aren't. The art is so important with those.

The only parody games that are good the ones where the parody isn't really the best part of it. Even the Rick and Morty one has really good animations and art for a 2D game. But it can be a nice way to get into it, like the The Library Story, i don't think I would've wasted my time with the grind if I didn't know the chars.

A good parody game to me doesn't require you to have knowledge of the existing materiel to enjoy the game, references are fine but if the whole game needs a complete understanding of the original then I'm more likely to drop it.

Ohhhh, i don't like parodies. Its usually a bastardization of the original work instead of honoring it. Most are just so bad, even the fuckfest ones.

This is a difficult question. As many have said a parody of something SPECIFIC tends to be hit or miss. Also, the developer will need to be VERY careful with all parts of any parody. The characters, setting, situations, etc. NEED to be believable and FIT the chosen subject that is being parodied.

Of course there is also the option of a GENERAL parody. Thinking about it I would say that a VERY fun game that fits this would be 'Midlife Crisis'. I mean instead of a YOUNG(ish) MC we get a middle-aged guy. Instead of just being a pervert that only thinks about having LOTS of SEX, he is lovable, fun, funny (the guy sings GREAT songs) that actually cares about more than just banging the ladies. The games works as both a (SEXY) fun game, AND as a parody of Adut games in general.

In the end I would have to say that a parody CAN work but the Developer(s) need to be careful, work within a LIMITED universe AND accept that they will (mostly) have a limited audience.

Just a thought.

Oh, you were talking about series parody. I thought more about genre of comedy, like joking about tropes.
Yeah, don't know all these games, but some are really enjoyable like "Four Elements Trainer".
That Azula arc was 🔥 🔥 🔥 🔥 both literally and metaphorically

Parody games are fantastic. If they look interesting enough and I like the tags and pictures, they expose me to cartoons I otherwise never would have seen because they look incredibly stupid. Plus playing and decision making is more fun playing a parody than watching the actual cartoon.

Midlife Crisis is Fucking Awesome.

Some of my favorite games tbh.
DC Animated Universe -> Super Unlimited
Avatar -> Four Elements
Harry Potter -> Innocent Witches
Disney's Aladin -> Princess Trainer Gold, fond memories, thank you Akabur

i feel like alot of the storylines or characters are just cheap or dont make sense its really upsetting when im trying to play a parody game but i can tell the dev didnt understand everything about the source material they just like the booby lady

I would love a Harry Potter parody game but well made, well thought out and developed, that is actually something believable.

Some of these are great. A time traveling one comes to mind.

some of them seem fun but I feel like they'd be even better if they were just their own thing

Can be good or bad, depends on the original, on the dev and on the artist. If you base your work on an original you need to come close to its standards in story AND art.
However, i hate mutations. For example, when i play a fairy tail game i expect a loli tag for wendy.

I love parody games loved play jikage rising just waiting til act 3 has more content to resume it
