There are a couple things about it... First, it came out in 2009... so it's been 15 years in development. There's really no rhyme or reason to the way its being developed, and I don't think it has an ending in mind. Additionally, the original creator way back when was completely against translation. And there's a ton to translate, because its just a big pile of scope creep, just working off into whatever direction he felt like at the time. Then there was at least a couple offshoot version that modified the original, and each of those had their own translations, features, etc. Not to mention drama within the translator community. And since its old, there's not as strong of a community trying to do the translations.

In short... development hell, translation hell, multiple version confusion, drama, old, and huge.

Oh yeah, I remember it being a bitch to get running due to different language packs needed for windows. Even the translated one needed the Japanese pack because otherwise certain files would be just gibberish and the game wouldn't start. Then you needed a very specific version of the rpg maker runtime and the list goes on.

there are posts on their page as little as 3 months ago its not super active and it's a classic... that said its a 15 year old game made in an engine from the 2000's it's a great game to play if you like classic and vintage games (think DoS) But it's a huge pain to get running and it has an older ps2 era graphics and pixel art style that may turn some people off.

I honestly thought the game was complete years ago but they allow for fan modding of the game which might be the development path this is on. there's hours of content In it which could be a good or bad thing depending on whether you just want to open the gallery or play a game with lots of content.

main sotry of game is not fully done but it was at stage where you could consider nearly there, also serena path is fully completed as far as I know but since it was more of side project it is not as long or in depth as Nanako path. As for the other charactes yea the development hell and the splinter of one porson making his own path for main story and how they were being called selfish by the rest of community and dev, only to years later realise he may had good idea as seen with serena standalone story that came out recently although different story completly and dev.

I was reading through the blog site for the VHMV version, and it is still being worked on. it seems like the new translator is having to fix a lot of issues from the prior translators relying heavily on google.

i managed to get ahold of 230814 version of VH01 but it's only partially translated, but it does have a new (3rd) playable character. I took the available version of VHMV and used RPGM MV to make a distributable version. If anyone is interested i will figure out how to post a mega link for each.
