I just found something out during watching the Olympics Closing ceremony and felt the need to share. There is a Filipino gymnast who won two gold medals at the Paris Olympics and his country are giving him a three bedroom house as a reward. Several companies are also donating gifts but the thing that made me burst out laughing is that one of those 'gifts/prizes' is... a lifetime supply of free Colonoscopies.

Yep you read that right Colonoscopies... for free... for life... Go figure.

I'm not young though I do get free healthcare at point of use. In fact I'm fast approaching the age where those procedures may become the norm. However I just find it weirdly specific. I could understand generally free superior healthcare provision for physiotherapy, diagnostics and testing, treatment and what-have-you. But specifically mentioning it as Colonoscopies just tickled me. It's just so specific and raises many questions in my head. Like does gymnastics do something to your body that renders you more susceptible to issues in that area for example. It's just... well...

Yes, the use of muscles deteriorate them in the long run because cells die and there is a limit on how many times the surrounding ones can split to replace dead ones, although in the case of athletes it compensates because the new structures are more resistant than the old ones.
As a gymnast your internal organs and connective tissue are getting a lot of wear and tear they are not supposed to get, which does not compound well with the previous fact.
But the most likely situation is that, since athletes also take a lot of drugs, it damages their digestive track, so I guess it's good to get a camera up your ass every now and then to make sure everything is fine.
