THAT'S why a game show where everyone gets along, has fun, doesn't care about winning or losing, and can accept that there's no big money or prize at the end of it- would not work in the states. Period.
She's right as long as the platter spin up and the read head still works... BUT data recovery- where they disassemble the drive in a clean room and read the individual platters is $$$ AF, so that may not even be an option AND there's no guarantee of success, but you still have to pay for it.

I had that happen when the little piece of ceramic fell off the readhead and rattled around at 7200RPM. That is not a sound you ever want to hear or expect. Let's just say pants were shat.
I haven't built a tower in years, so my knowledge would point towards IDE controllers on the motherboard or the drive (don't even know if they still use IDE controllers) or maybe if it's USB try a different port and see if that does anything.
