There isn't too many that are censored - the ones that are are usually developed by some asian people; where the rules regarding that are stricter.

If you're talking about Western games with incest, this is usually done to get around Patreon's rules. If you're talking about Japanese games with mosaic, it's because of Japanese law, uncensored Japanese games generally only exist because they were officially licensed outside of Japan, but even so some continue with mosaic because the artists didn't detail the genitals very much.

Patreon is a venture-backed private company. Its investors include the founders, employees, and venture capital firms, none of which want to be seen as "promoting" questionable content. Now here is where I go off on a tangent...... It is what happens when a company grows beyond its original vision and is seen by big companies as a potential cash cow. It gets harder and harder to publish certain content because of the growing outcry over it. People have forgotten or refuse to accept that the content isn't bad. "People" are bad but it is easier to blame the content. Why else would a parent sue a video game company over its content, blaming the content on their whacked out kid going out and shooting up an elementary school. Forget the terrible parenting, complete lack of boundaries and actually investing time in your kids. Lets blame it on the content. Countries like Australia have gone as far as to describe underage media, art and illustrations of any kind, as a conceptual "living entity" in order to prosecute people for it. Let that sink in, lol.

For me, it really depends... I see everyone rage about censored, but it often doesn't bother me. It depends how much is censored and how badly it's done. Most of the time I really couldn't care less, the plot/image/situation is hot enough, I don't care about seeing the full details on someones dick.

The censorship of the art is primarily due to Japanese anti-lewdity laws. I can't stand looking at censored porn, I've seen so many games that have wonderful art that I just can't play due to the censorship (still waiting for a decensor for Kamidori Alchemy Meister! That game was so good but I could only get myself to do one full playthrough when it takes 3-4 to get everything )

I guess it depends on the game. Sometimes the censoring is not too bad and doesn't distract to much. Other go over the top some times and ruins the experience.

To be clear, I don't mind censorship of genitals. However, I typically avoid any game that is censored, which mainly is the Japanese games. I did try a few but I found them lacking.

There are three REAL reasons for censorship so it's pointless to complain about it.
Monetization, distribution, and legal compliance.

In the US you see a lot of soft censorship like 'fade to black' or heavy innuendo instead of actual scenes because before digital distribution developers and publishers HAD to avoid a M rating at all costs. An M rating was essentially a death sentence for a game being published because no retailer would pick it up. No distribution beyond software fairs means no monetization and no monetization means no more development.

Before age ratings you saw the 'wild west' of uncensored games, but they were adult in context if not in content. Popular example is 'Custard's Revenge' which had you move a pixelated person to the right to 'overlap' a tied up woman. Naughty bits heavily implied even if it's like 4-5 pixels for each character.

For Asian developers there are laws against explicit content that require mosaics and censorship of certain content in order to be considered legal. This means development is done with this censorship in mind and typically hard coded into the games and graphics. This legal compliance allows them to be distributed in retailers and digital stores and makes removing it difficult if it's localized or translated so localization teams don't typically bother. Same tried and true story there. Censorship required to be distributed and distribution required for monetization. When it leaves areas where legal restrictions are lifted and no longer needs distribution there is monetary incentive to having a different build of the game (that could leak back to Asia and have legal repercussions) or doing mosaic removal.

Even now with digital distribution there is censorship if you want to distribute or monetize. Patreon has restrictions on the content created by developers to monetize on their platform. Steam also has content restrictions for distribution. No money, no development. Currently 'after market modification' is how some of that censorship is lifted, but that's a loophole that could be filled in at anytime. There are other platforms and direct distribution, but if you want to play on the big platforms you have to comply.

Heck, even quasi-legal pirate sites like LC get hammered by this. All it takes is someone asking 'Is this legal' to have hosts shutting things down to avoid even the chance of getting raided for illegal content.

Seems like LC is becoming the dumping ground for censored games. I think 1/2 the games that have been uploaded since yesterday are censored. Many of them appear to be the same game series. Looking forward to when LC has a filtering option.

I was once learning to code(many, many years ago) and took it upon myself to uncensor a game and de-grind-ify it(even by today standards it was stupidly grindy and once I understood what the code did I learned that the longer you played, the harder you had to grind, so it was actually a skill based porn game with a ceiling so hard it was impossible to unlock anything else after an hour of playing if you had played a perfect game so far(roughly how long it took the variable that determined the difficulty to surpass the game over threshold without player interaction, any mistate made it increase too)).
I think it took me 2 days between finding assets and making small changes to the code(mostly quote out lines).
The uncensoring part was sort of easy, mostly a bit of not-photoshop(the program I used doesn't even exist anymore) and deleting assets, but finding all the variables and what they did was hell.
I added the Alias I was using at the time in the credits and swore to never do that again nor play censored games.
