Some news...

Hello everyone,
Sorry if I've been a little quiet lately, but with the holidays approaching my real job is taking up a lot of my time.
But I'm still working on my little games, I'm currently working on "all about", because I need to leave "life of..." for a little while to think about what's next without forcing myself.
Hope you won't be too disappointed about that!
But don't worry, I'll get right back to it!
I'm thinking of releasing an update for "all about" by the end of the month or early January, in the meantime, hope you have a great Christmas.[/Center}

I like this site but the administrators need to stop putting "abandoned" games as updates with an updated date, otherwise people will start to lose trust in the site.
On the website: Life of Desmond - Version: [0.9.4.2] [Badvado]
Latest Update Dec 20, 2023
On my computer: See screenshot (version and date)

Except that it's not abandoned it's onhold as of their post on patreon on December 8.
The guy's right about the release date thing, though. Latest Update shouldn't be "the date it was posted to LC", because that's wildly confusing, particularly when LC picks up backlog games or requested games that may not have been updated for months or years. If another field needs to be added to the template for "LC Updated" date, that's fine, but it's not generally needed. That value only really varies from the OP edit date when other stuff gets changed in the OP.

"Latest Update" should be exclusively reserved for "the date that the latest game update was initially released". 0.9.4.3 has a release date of 27 Sep 2023 on the Other Site, which matches the Patreon post date.

That said, "Release Date" is wrong here, too. It's, again, "first date posted to LC", which is pointless because the post date shows that. It should be "first date the first update was released" so people have a realistic idea of the developer's pace. In this case, for instance, it should be 27 Oct 2020, not some random 2022 date when the Dean bot found it.

Edited to clarify and provide examples: Not a single one of these dates is useful to someone looking at the game:

Not much can be done about that other then never updating older files that have had missed updates other then never updating them till they get another update if they ever do get another one. The only other thing that could be done is to update it and promote for the date that the update came out which pretty much means no one will ever see that it's been updated as it'll move to that spot way back in the latest updates for whatever date and time was picked.

Obviously let the thread timestamps and OP-edited timestamps stay as-is. Those should be as accurate as possible. Those are forum-related timestamps, not game-related timestamps. What I mean are the specific "Latest Update" and "Release Date" fields in the OP of a game's thread. In some cases, those dates are literally available in the post Dean is scraping from, but Dean ignores them and makes its own stuff up.

If Latest Updates page promotion is based exclusively on the Latest Update text field of the OP, that's a coding problem that needs to be fixed in the Latest Updates page, because it's not useful. The ideal way to do it, IMO (provided that I am not a forum coder, just an amateur who's poked through a lot of data handling programs):
  • Have an internal/hidden flag on a game thread's OP for "game updated".
  • On Latest Updates page, promote based on Thread OP Edit timestamp, provided "game updated" flag is True.
  • When a mod edits the game thread's OP without adding an update (adding links, fixing formatting, fixing tags, etc.), they set that flag to False.
  • When an actual update is posted, set that flag back to True.
  • Latest Updates page gets an additional field on game cards to show Latest Update date, since that may be different from the date being used to promote the game (since LC may not have had a game thread at the time of the Latest Update timestamp).
At present, when Dean uploads an update, those fields would be literally better left blank and the game manually promoted, if the Latest Update timestamp is not within a few days. As it is, they are actively misleading.

EDIT: And in true programmer fashion, I rubber-ducked myself into realizing that my "game updated" flag idea is dumb. Ignore the part with strikethrough. Ideally, the Latest Updates promotion should still be based somehow on Thread OP Edit timestamps where a game update link was added, and I'd have to do actual program design concept work to think of the best way to do it... And I get paid for doing that stuff, so I would rather not do it for free for a site I'm donating money to.

A knee-jerk and off-the-cuff idea, though: Add a "Updated on LC" field, and use THAT for Latest Updates promotion and let Dean auto-update THAT field instead of the Latest Update or Release Date fields, which have semantic meanings Dean fundamentally does not and cannot understand.

I can't say why the Latest Update in this specific thread is set to what it is, but we're already doing what you're asking.
It's not an issue with Dean though.

But I'm not sure this has all that much relevancy to Life of Desmond. I suggest creating a thread in General Discussion if you to talk about it further :)

If you take a look at Mech Academy, you'll see the Latest Update is set to the 15th., but the thread itself wasn't updated until the 19th.

In Under The Moonlight, the update came out the day before the thread was updated, so that's what the Latest Update was set to.

A more extreme example of this happening, such as when we miss a game entirely but for some reason decide to get it on here anyway, could be Camp Pinewood 2; the last update was back in March, but it didn't land on LC until very recently.

The waters can get muddied when someone takes the release date of an alpha release and uses that as their basis, even though the update they actually have is the public one. If there are no differences it makes sense, but if it contains bugfixes, and especially if there's additional content, I think it's more accurate to say the public release date is the correct one.

Nevertheless, I agree with you. The Latest Update date should be when the update was actually released. Not when the thread was updated.

I don't disagree, and I've said all I intended to. The only reason it came up in this thread is that both the "Latest Update" and "Release Date" fields for the OP here are wildly inaccurate (by months and years, respectively).

Render look really old, but charcters and story make up for it. I hope a new update is launched soon.

Wierd art and some freaky moments - gay not for me but the renders ruin it generally

Good characters and story, if not the greatest renders. Always look forward to updates. Shame it's on hold atm, hope the dev picks it up again soon.

the story is kinda messy and art old but should be good if they do a remake

Before I download can someone answer two question, this game was promoted on another tread for the bestiality in it, but I didn't see it recalled in the tag, is there's any?
Second, I like anal too, is it present in the game?

Both are in the game

Do you know when a new update will be released (help me for more points)
Good question, since last year i'm waiting this update, its a really good game, will be a shame if its abandoned.
