If it's simple, clear and meaningful then I can tolerate or even like it.

Most sandboxes are unnecessary, repetitive and grindy with maze like house and annoying map which makes it pain to play. Also some kind of time system is somewhat common and big part of playtime is skipping time. Also almost all of them are just unnecessary and doesn't offer anything to actually improve the game. It's just time wasting clicking.

Great example is Being DIK. You can disable sanbox if you want, but it actually offers extra content. Yes the DIK house is bit of a maze, but it's still fun.

Power Vacuum is another example. It sandbox is very simple even with time system. It basically allows you to choose order to do events and that's it. Not too much pointless clicking or mazes.
