Hey everyone,

I've been an avid VN player and I've noticed that some fetishes are easier to insert in games than others. One of the easiest one by far is incest. It's probably the easiest for players to just outright ignore. If you like it its great, if you don't its super easy to ignore it.

Personally, NTR leaves me absolutely unbothered, probably since I usually play 'passively', meaning I'm rarely emotionaly involved being the main caracter. Everything feels like I'm watching a movie so I don't take the cheating 'personally.

Let's say you had to make a brand new game and you wanted it to be as broad-appeal as you could (for the sake of making money with the game for example), which kinks would you put in to gather more players without pushing others out?

If I had to order fetishes from unbothered to really annoying game-wise for me it would go something like this:

The 'vanilla' kinks:

- Lesbian: This one's as free as it gets
- Incest: Its so easy to completely ignore it that its an almost absolute freebee
- Harem: Another pretty free one. The only thing this one actually gives is the ability to see all the scenes in a game pretty much
- Milfs: this one bugs me. Seriously half of the milfs in AVN look like mid-thirties girls. It just goes to show how players care very little for age looks.
- NTR: I'm completely non-plussed by cheating caracters. It's just another scene.

The 'ok that's a little more niche' kinks:

- Pregnancy: that's a little more involved. That one I get people might not enjoy. Would also be super interesting to know if that kink is related to actually having RL kids.
- Domination: I guess it depends on who dominates who. Again I guess some people just like diversity and it doesnt bother them.
- BDSM: It's an aquired taste for most people. It's rarely well done in VNs...

The 'Dealbreaker' kinks

- Violence: depends on the degree I guess
- Gay: Again some people are just completely put off by this. I get it.
- Loli: Thats another one that is absolutely cleaving.
- Monster girls/boys/bestiality: again another one that depends on the level. Seeing a sheep-on-giraffe-on-dolphin orgy leaves me uninterested.

What do you think?

Putting NTR in the "nobody cares" category feels like bait. But also there's a contingent of people turned off by lesbian and incest content. Some people hate harems either because they're unrealistic as presented or the game ends up with a bunch of love interests that don't get enough screentime. There's not really such a thing as kinks that everyone is fine with.

I suppose NTR can be quite intrusive as it often shapes the whole theme of the rest of the game, and all the interactions the characters have. Whereas other kinks just kind of show up in the odd sex scene and are easy to skip. Family Faring is like that, the hottest sex scenes are NTR-gated.

NTR comes in different shapes and sizes, depending on how they're inserted into the game. Take NTR Homestay, where you see multiple perspectives of everything. This makes it feel like an episode of desperate housewives.
Complet's games are sharing focused, but relationships are few and far between, so it's mostly just orgys.
Lastly, there's the NTR phone games, which are completely focussed on immersing the player into being NTRed.

Of these, i really dislike the last type, where i am not against the other two.

I think you would like . It only has half of your dealbreakers, most of the niche, and none of the vanilla kinks.

I really didn't express myself properly. It wasn't meant as bait. I meant that I feel NTR is usually a plot device I perceive as vanilla. Maybe because VNs are usually so cookie-cutter and bland that I rarely feel invested in the plot. So I see them as a creative alternative to old-fashionned pornography. I'm no expert but I think most people watching porn have exactly no fucking idea of the context that justifies banging in the script.

You do bring an interesting point, about diluting screen time with multiple characters in harem games. Which shows you do get involved with the storytelling. Probably the reason why some people absolutely abhor some kinks.

Ah absolutely. I didn't think about the focus of the fetish in my idea of ranking them. Good point! Fetish-centered games are obviously very niche. The problem with giving players the ability to avoid content is that it changes update value. I've seen a couple of updates on games where the creator concentrated on a certain path I wasn't interested in (think it was a harem game with a femboy character) and the whole update was about that relationship. Since the updates were far between I lost interest in the game because of that skip.

Thanks for the insight!

Downloading a game with the hopes of going to pound town and being presented with a majority of lesbian scenes is not as much of a free pass as you think. Bloodlines for example I asked myself what even his deal was with the amount of lesbian scenes. I think your ranking surely has some merit. The more niche you get the more people can be put off whilst those who are not have more staying power and are more likely of dropping bigger numbers on the game. If you cater to the vanilla crowd you make something that was done before, what you exactly don't want to be doing. Going at it thinking of what your audience would be first routes you into making something generic. If you are planning to make something I think you have more than a brief direction already and would realize whilst making that this scene does more harm than good if it goes to far into any niche.

I think you would get way more out of thinking what story you even wanted to tell and figuring out story telling structures and instruments rather than thinking about the tags. Those you attach to your game after it's been made. Make your game with the gap of vision you saw in others makings. I would start my MC out with falling flat on his face and be like here is you in this random place with this strain of completely new opportunities. When trying to make something, starting at nothing and layering up from there is the most logical to me even if the MC ends up in a wizard school. Have a brief Idea of the setting, keep it pliable and see after what tags you end up with. How the best games were made how I see it.
