one of the most common critics in some game/vn out there is that the story and setting is just cringe or strictly bad, even with good rendering or art.
like, not every dev are both good at storytelling and visual at the same time.

so, given that there are already well written classics (with life of the author plus 70 years expired, if that is a concern)
why aren't there more erotic adaptation of them?
given the available model assets, we are not talking about strict recreation,
for example an erotic plays adaptation of Pride and Prejudice in 21st century,
or serious literature adapted with added romantic sub-plot on like Life of a Party Member
or just a hype-ramped-up One Thousand and One Nights

Probably cause there just aren't that many customers or devs in this market looking for Pride and Prejudice adaptations. Not to say it couldn't be done, just that it's not what people mostly tend to gravitate to.

Also, I don't think it would necessarily bypass the need for storytelling skills. Effectively adapting a story into a different form can take a lot of skill- you have to have read and get the original story, for one, and then make a lot of decisions about how to translate it into a different setting and medium while both staying true to the original essence and keeping it fresh. And then figure out how to shove a lot of sex into it, if it wasn't already there.

So if more devs tried this you'd probably get a lot of stuff that was just plain bad, as bad as any other shovelware abandoned-at-0.002 game, then some stuff that was okay but lost audience members who either aren't interested in the original property or are really into it and dislike weak adaptations, and a small number of games that were really genuinely good both as AVNs and as literary adaptations... but then the devs good enough to pull the last off could just as easily do a solid original story, and possibly get a bigger audience.

The only adaptions people are interested in are based on more recent IP's. Not many people are interested in 100 year old stories they haven't heard about.

100 year old stories they haven't heard about.
Anyone about high-school will at least hear of Pride and Prejudice /One Thousand and One Nights, and I thought this site is 18+ at least on paper.
they are classic because of literature value, modern "IP" do not bear such seasoned value, at least not yet, can't match that a bit though.

I never read the two mentioned. I assume these 2 books are standard for US education, but remember there is whole world outside US. Also let's be honest, people do not want their school memories in their porn.

Fair, there is whole world outside do not have fair education, even the muricans lack sufficiently education;
but to be reminded that, on the opposite side of the earth, Japan or Vietnam for example, if you ask any colleague student there, they will be able to identify these books, read or not.

Just that, if one do not know who is Einstein, it is on the person, not on where the person come from. Still, your point is valid: there is whole world outside

But again, let's not side stepping from my opening post point,
it is not about the recognition of specific one of the classic, it is the utilization of the already available and well established classical plot, setting, scene and dialogue to make a good VN, specifically for those who lack creative writing skill but passionate in artistic and this disipline.

If you think about it it's not hard to figure that out, classic literature does not have suitable setting to make a porn game out of it, simple as that. If somebody doesn't know the source, it's pointless, and if somebody does, it's weird. Even the most simple love stories, like Romeo and Juliet or Tristan and Isolda... to make a good porn game out of it you would have to change and add a lot of things, and if you need to do that, you can as well create your own world.

In case of "serious" classical literature, anything you would make would be consider a parody, and if you want to make a parody it's better to do it with universe that is known to everyone, well liked and has a lot of characters that many fantasized to fuck, so for example Star Wars or Marvel and DC.

Making an erotic adaptation of great literature isn't exactly easy either, you'd have to change and add a lot to the characters in order to create an adult VN, unless you plan on turning books like Stephen King's IT into a VN.

Yes and of course, we do not need to aim to the hardest ones, we can put it into tiers, tier 1 and close to 2 can still be better starting points
Tier 1, Literatured like IT or The Great Gatsby which have implied erotic plot are good.
Tier 2, Literature such as The Tale of Genji which have classical romance plot.
Tier 3, Literature that need to capture the essence in order to make adaptation, The Old Man and The Sea
