Who was better, Bergkamp or Henry? Does Cashly Cole and RVP deserve the all the hate? Would you let Declan shag your Mrs? What are your hopes for the transfer window? Are we getting that big name striker in? Who will be challenging for the league this season? Will Man City get back to their best? Can Liverpool continue to operate at last season's level? Americans who are from the midwest mostly know Arsenal, and hate arsenal because of their owner, Stan Kroenke, who moved the St. Louis Rams to LA because St. Louis City wouldn't pay for his billion dollar stadium he wanted.

So, if a midwestern person casually watches soccer, the saying goes that their favorite team is whoever is playing against Arsenal.

To put it short. My opinions.

Henry over bergkamp.
As a united fan RVP was a baller. Fuck the haters.
Declan can most certainly not shag my mrs
Don't care about your transfer window. No players gonna help you finally win that league
Youll get a mediocre striker and all the fans will say he's the best player in the world .
City's finished hopefully.
I don't see Liverpool dominating like they did this season but still will be competing.
And it's gonna take a few seasons for United to get back to the top. Hopefully cunha can change our attack

I did a bit of a deep dive on this some time ago (and it was some time ago, certainly further back than last Thursday which is approaching the limit of my memory nowadays so the following may or may not be accurate) and the turn originated as a slur used by rival fans which supporters adopted to wear with pride.

Fans of the club had long been known as the 'gunners' as the club was originally Woolwhich Arsenal way back in the 1890's (might even have been earlier, too lazy to Google). Literally the place in Woolwich where all the weapons were stored. Hence the cannon on the club badge.

Post WWII until the 1970's the Arsenal fans were notoriously a bit rowdy. Hooligans even, if you would. The term Gooner was derived as a portmanteau of 'gunner' and 'hooligan' and used as insult by rival fans. Obviously the Arsenal fanbase, being mostly British (in the days before cub football wildly international) and unable to contain their genetic disposition for stealing other peoples stuff, stole the label and have been wearing it as a badge of pride ever since.

It's a bit unfortunate the term has become popular of late for meaning something unsuitable for polite conversation, but still not as unfortunate as having a club badge featuring a fucking CHICKEN STANDING ON TOP OF A BASKETBALL!!!!
