Some general comments:
-start small
-release source so people can continue if you get busy with other things.
-release videos of small updates so people know work is ongoing.
I once saw a game called *Alexia's Return* that I really liked; the developer had simply created the assets using a modded version of *Skyrim*... He just took images from the modded game, wrote a story to go with them, and created the animations based on that. It worked really well...
I think it doesn't matter at all how you create your game; the main thing is that it has a good story. Although I do see that many people here prefer Ren'Py.
