Social Media

Don't see the point of any of it.
Pointless waste of time. We would all be better off without any of it.

Never used any, just found some stupid meme there.

Social media is a stain on society. The only one I can even use without physical pain is Reddit, and that is getting harder to use every day.

Are we, as a world culture, slipping away from our humanity at an increasingly rapid pace because we are being "reprogrammed" toward an online addiction that continues to feed our need to be validated by strangers via digital media?
Yes.
And I only used/s this social media here (lewdcorner.com). Not any of the "normal" ones.
But it fulfilled everything, you described in the OP.

I think social media is a blight upon society. It is not healthy as you constantly see people put on fake lives, and you have kids growing up seeing all these unrealistic things which in turn causes more wide spread depression problems.

I hate that twitter forces you to have an account to look at shit now and I refuse to make one.
I only have ever looked at twitter to see updates from creators or updates on projects.

It's both shit, and a distraction from material reasons for the problems of the world.

The only good thing about it are the independent reporters that are actually allowed to question things.
That being said, it also allows charismatic con artists to say all sorts of nonsense that ends up making people stupider.

My wife has a theory on cell phones being the most detrimental thing to relationships, primarily because the tendency is to expect immediate responses and when the response time is past the individual's expectations it creates a sense of mistrust, regardless of the reasons.

I take it a step further. I believe social media has been the catalyst that has pushed society to the precipice and we are now staring into the abyss...interpersonal relationships have been discarded for 30 second sound bites and mini-dopamine rushes to stave off the anxiety of not having enough "likes" or whatever platform equivalency the social media platform someone is using substitutes for likes.

Thoughts? Are we, as a world culture, slipping away from our humanity at an increasingly rapid pace because we are being "reprogrammed" toward an online addiction that continues to feed our need to be validated by strangers via digital media?
I agree with you, rebelling against this "reprogramming" is a hard fight for the own mental stamina.

I know this is not an easy thing to do in all cases, but with people I know (wife, family, friends, etc), I set the expectations that I'm not on the phone at all times and it might take me a long while to answer. If they don't like it, well, too bad.
A few can moan and whine from time to time but you just keep doing your thing and they 'll come around eventually.
Same for me. Everyone that knows me well enough, gets that I'm not reachable 24/7 and that I respond to messages when I feel the need to, not when anyone expects it from me.
If something is really urgent, they can call ... and open a good old talk (if I didn't forget my smartphone at home while being outside ... happens ... I'm old).

Im on those a little but almost never post or its just reposting memes.i think twitter is the worst of them all tho

I would like a rule that no phones in public gatherings, only allowed at waiting rooms and church and other boring waiting in general

They are certainly a piece of garbage, but I don't think we can blame all the rot on the modern human interactions to them, there is a lot more to that.

Social media by itself i think is fine, it's the easy access to internet that has been detrimental. We should just go back to dial-up and Nokia phones tbh

At the risk of sounds like a total angry, bored and old boomer, social media and phones are a mistake.

While we are at it, we can go back to the good old hunting-gathering practices. Who need houses and settlements.

Social media is like a drug of sorts. Once you're hooked kinda hard to get off.
