Hi,

Title really says it all. Sometimes I open a game after a long time, without having updated it and then suddenly may saves don't work anymore. Is this a windows updates thing or how could this be possible? I haven't essentially changed any of the files...I do run my games from an external drive, but the problem doesn't occur in every game. Any thoughts?

Check that your save file is still intact, or that the game didn't create a new save directory that you need to manually move your old save file into.

If you haven't updated the game, you most likely have either corrupted files related directly to the game or your save files. How could this happen? By transferring the game to an external drive. There are various possible reasons for this. 1. Not very physical good condition of the medium itself, 2. Did you connect the external media via USB port? There may be a problem with the contacts or the cable. 3. Try running the game as administrator, there may be a permissions problem. Also - is the game folder not marked as “read only”? In this case uncheck this box.
Check the state of your external drive for bad blocks with specialized utilities. Also check the port you are using to connect the external drive.
But one thing is certain - it can't be related to Windows updates.

Unless I missed the details, how about you start with: A game example. What engine? Windows version? Do you have an AV? etc. We aren't diviners unfortunately :D

The saves disappear? Or they are there but you receive an error when trying to load? If so, which error?
