For those who grew up in the 90s, you might have been lucky to play the Star ocean games on PS1 and PS2, but what if I told ya, Tri-ace did a Fantasy Medievl JRPG as well.

Enter Radiata stories, the Best JRPG on the PS2.

The short is that you play a Jack Russel (Yes our protag shares the name of a dog breed.) who wants to become a knight of Radiata, the Huamn city of the game. You follow his path through this and through the events of the game.

The game follows the normal Star ocean style game play, battles take place in an arena sperate from the overoworld, which battles engage after you run into an enemy that can be seen on the overworld so there are no Random battles. Unlike star ocean though you only control jack, you can have 3 other party members who will attack and move on their own for the most part, you can give them orders after you get kicked out of the knights becuase some fatty lord didnt like his daughter getting hurt in battle and blames Jack and his captain Ganz.

BUT thats not all, you can also use formations, theres a handful of them and they all have differnt effects, but the best ones are attack and defense, attack basically makes the party gang up on one target in a cricle and beat their shit in. Defense makes the team face outward and defend while healing a bit.

Then theres jacks attacks, instead of a normal attack, you can slot jack with certain moves he learns over gameplay, across four weapons, 1h sword, 2h sword, spear, axe. TBH 1h sword for the most part will get you through the game, though the final main story dungeon has a really good 2h Sword. AXe and spears kinda get the short of of the stick.

The game has 175 NPCs you can have join your party, and some are easy to get others require certain story points and some you need others already joined. Natuarally the easy recuits are weaker, so they are good for the early game, the best characters you get are the guild leaders, being just plain OP. BUT theres MORE! NPCs who join you have skills you can learn from them by being in a formation with them enough, once you have that skill you can put it on jack for him to use anytime.

And of course the games humor is on point, the game opens with jack getting whipped in the trails, but still gets in anyway due to family name. Within a few seconds when jacks shown his quarters it has a great death wail scene. Later during the first mission Some goblins try to hijack the supply cart only to lose a word game where they challenged jack and his party to.

TL:DR; TBH I dont think words alone can do the game justice, everyone should give it a chance if they can as its a great Star Ocean style JRPG with a medievil Fantasy setting.

Where were you to sell it at the time?! I had no interest in it when it was new but would now ;)

As much as I enjoyed my Japanese games, especially Dragon Warrior Quest games, I was more into Ultima or Fallout games in the 90s.

FUNNY STORY!

So...this takes place a handful of years ago, but the PS2 wasnt getting new games much, I was with family, visitng other family. We stopped at a Blaines farm and fleet, to be a meet up before we met for dinner (Yup midwest area) and this was back when they had video games and movies area, it wasnt big but they had some. Hell I saw a PC copy of Lego Stunt track driver, among the games, but I found Radiata stories among the collection and grabbed it, one of the best games I got.

Ah yeah I fondly remember playing this game to bad I sold all my PS1 and PS2 games for a nice profit.

Good thing there are roms and emulators to play them all on my PC.

You monster, selling your PS1 and PS2 games.

Thats a PS1 game
Fuck really? damn I'm getting old, my memory is fading and I have disgraced my family :'D. Thank you for reminding me!

Well wish I was sorry but I made $20,000 so not sorry.💲

Anyway Xenogears and the entire Suikoden JRPGs were among my favorites as well.

Radiata Stories is like one of my favorite games of all time. I spent like 400 hours in total over the years and I even have a second copy of the game just in case something happens to the first one. The characters are great; the world is fun to explore; the soundtrack is amazing.
It's kind of a shame that both of the endings kinda suck, though.

OH THE SOUNDTRACK! Its so good, its by the same guy who did the Ace attorney soundtrack.

And yeah, I wish there was a golden path ending where you help out both sides so you could get all the recuitable characters in one file.

Geez, this entire thread is just pure PS1 & 2 nostalgia, between Legend of Dragoon (finished), MM Legends 1 & 2 (reached late-game), and Radiata Stories (stopped when Jack got booted). To add to that nostalgia, one of my absolute favorite JRPGs on PS1 are Suikoden 1 & 2, and V on PS2.

Also, fun fact! Radiata Stories got one helluva spiritual successor in the form of Radiant Historia on DS, which is also one of my all-time favorite JRPGs in general and on DS specifically. That game also feels a lot like Chrono Trigger (also massive fan of & finished it), especially its time traveling themes & gameplay, because former devs of that game also worked on this one.
