Like you folks, I'm also a Developer.
Seems like some Developers thinks that adding a paywall to part of their contents is a good idea. I'm going to speak from observation and previous experience. I hope you bear with me and learn from this. But it's still your choice, regardless.
From what I've observed, this never ends well. I can't see any faster way to get what you want, not realistically. Unless you're just one of the lucky few. Fans are kind of sensitive beings that we need to please. We can't please everyone, though. But if we're striving for the majority, it's best to learn from the pros who has been at it for years.
It's actually frowned on by the majority to paywall your contents. Which creates trust issues because the other Developers who went this path were actually in it for the Cash Grab. You can swear you'd never do that, but sadly, the fans trust is already scarred. So, this would not work out. Releasing your version with your actual full contents is best because people will see your efforts. And most consider it as being honest compared to those who actually does paywall everything. Not to mention, most people aren't willing to pay for something they can't see. I think this would only work if you're an actual gaming company.
I'm going to use the Blackheart team as an example. Can keep your art gallery behind a paywall. No one would argue with that unless they are extremely selfish.
The Blackheart team, they always interact with their fans to the best of their ability. Provided contents that are suitable for their fans, even going as far as making multiple paths. You're more than welcome to see how many subscribers they actually have. Which is actually a lot more than most of us would get.
Here's my suggestion and recommendation that works for 90% of us that does this.
Here's a list of DO NOT.
1. Do not hide your game behind a paywall. As explained above.
2. Do not disregard your fans as just banter. They are telling you how to make your game better. Read this as a whole, not just as one person.
3. Do not fall into the illusion that if your game gets leaked, you'll lose subscribers. Those with money asking for contents have more empathy than most.
4. Do not argue with fans because they do not share your view on your story. If you have nothing good to say, just simply move on.
5. Do not look for faster alternative. A new face = A weary user.
6. Do not abandon or lie to your potential supporters. Abandon a project would make a Sub extremely nervous. Lie to them and you lose them.
Here's a list of what to do.
1. Always advertise your game under your signature. If enough money, can get any websites to advertise at the front page.
2. Make sure you make yourself presentable towards your potential subs and fans. Remember, being an asshole = harder path to Subs and Fans.
3. Show signs of updates about your game. Especially your BEST render. Not all of them. Always keep everyone guessing what'll happen next.
4. Always have a plot in mind. Even if it's not written out, always have your Start>Middle>End. Leave some room to expand, too.
5. Play other games that are more successful. Read the comments and see WHY people likes the game.
6. Make friends with other Developers. Learn from them and let them learn from you.
7. Always talk about your game. Tell people they should check it out and leave some feedback.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
This is based on mine and many other Developers experiences. Always create your Discord server and release your update on the channels made specifically for your tiers. Never release your games on other platforms. Especially because of "Character's Consent" and questionable contents such as Lolis, Shotas, and so on. This will help prevent you from being banned on these platforms. An advice given to me by @SeveredRealms and @Guz89
As a Developer, I've been in this line of business long enough. People will always have their opinions. It only matters what the majority thinks when trying to make money through this. Tomorrow is always a different day. Always stay true to your fans. Only the lucky ones can get the best. We have to work our way up. And it always starts small.
If y'all have any questions, feel free to ask. We Developers needs to stick together and do our best.
