So, i've been studying russian for almost 6 months now, using duolingo and some videos on the internet. I'm already watching some instagram reels in russian, but would like to improve my learning by watching some movies, cartoons, or anything else. What do you guys recomend?

I do not have any idea about russian, but surely it will help consuming content as much as you can in that language. Games, videos, shows, and talking with ppl on the internet are good options for you. Don't rely too much on duolingo as it is just a support tool. And i would DEFINITELY STOP watching short-based content such as instagram reels for that kind of goal

Yeah, Duolingo is pretty much just a language game.

Why do you think short form content is bad? I mean, it's hard to get "real life" experience in russian without going there. For me, reels have been the closest to "real russian" that i could achieve

Sure, i get it. I'm using it just to learn words and use examples, so it's helping. But i'm really looking for something that will really help me get the real language experience

Short content is not bad as such, the problem is to consume this content continuously, as they are stimuli one after another that overload your brain with dopamine and can develop an intolerance or lack of attention to longer or slower content. If you think it helps, keep using it, but I would recommend other means.

ErzuzB talked about schools, I personally don't like the methodology of these in general, since they study the language in an academic and impractical way. The best way to learn a language is to start with casual, everyday conversations. After reading different suggestions you should choose what you think is best for you, since we are all different and what it serves to me it could not to you

Use It in practice every chance you get that may be the most important part in languages

As a person whose native language is Russian...why? Why would you want to learn it, OP? What is there worth the hassle?

Because it's already my third language. I speak portuguese (native) and English. I like Russian, the culture, the business side, and i think it's a hard language to learn (if i learn it, any other languages i'll learn after will be easier), so it's a nice practice

I learned other languages a bit by playing games + duolingo. Reading novels helps too
Привет от русского друга ;)

Watch Russian movies or series with English subtitles. See how much of it you can follow without reading the subs. I would suggest slice-of-life series rather than something about a specific situation (e.g. war).

Well, for one thing, Russian has a wealth of great literature, like Pushkin, Tolstoy, Dostojevski etc.
And I think it's also a good way to understand (parts of) other Slavic languages. It is arguably also one of the more difficult choices to learn a Slavic language, due to the Cyrillic alphabeth, which makes it rather more difficult to read.

Try some avns in russian. I did that with the game Sisterly Lust. Definitely learn some vocabulary first but it helps seeing words used with pictures in a story.

I'm Russian and I've been learning English for probably 3 years now. I can tell from my experience that you have a long way ahead of you. How I started learning English. I went online and found a website with free children's books and read them with a translator. I write down the words that I do not know in an electronic notebook on my phone. 50 words for one week. Then I wrote down 20 words a day in a special program for repetition (I recommend the Memory Card application). Two years later, I started writing down 10 words a day to make it easier. Then the next day in the morning I look in the Memory Card which words I have memorized, I cross out and write down new words there and repeat them every hour during the working day. Now I watch TV series, movies, and play games only in English. And with English subtitles. Well, I also communicate here. I write through a translator, but I read without it.
The disadvantage of communicating with people through programs is that they are not always free, unlike books, movies, and forums. Especially people from another continent with different time zones.

Ulitsa Sezam (Sesame Street) really helped me .... as funny as it may sound.

I've heard that consuming media in the background helps a lot. "You don't need to understand EVERYTHING" is a mindset that stops you from stopping every 2 seconds to cross-reference with a native language and its more so about getting used to it. people suggest podcasts or movies you've already seen.
