For reasons I don't want to discuss I had to move and get a new job. Both my old job and new job are food service but I've notices things about my new job that are weird.

First: Management constantly dismisses people early. I wouldn't consider that odd cause even my old job did that during the down seasons but not so many people and every day.

Second: Management tells me to ring up meals as a large by default. These jobs normally makes you try and sell a large meal to get more money, but it's not the default, so it seems even sketchy.

Last: The restaurant was connected to a convenience store. I didn't know that the store was renovating or closed down but given how I haven't seen any workers go in or out of it, I believed it's closed down.

All 3 of these things makes me believe the store is going under and will get closed down, but it could be they're just dishonest and greedy. I've been searching for a new job just in case, but I want to get other people's opinion.

Sounds to me like a little of Column A, little of Column B. They're in dire straits financially, probably razor-thin profit if any at all, and they're not above slightly dishonest tactics to try keep their heads above water. I'd guess they got a lot of their business from people going to the convenience store and without that they're struggling; does it look like they get a steady customer flow?

Granted, defaulting to large meals is probably not the worst sin in business, but keeping your resume out there for other jobs is probably a good move. Don't want to have all your eggs in these guys' basket.

Maybe not, but at work I do like Majima and say "The customer is God." Cheating customers like that doesn't sit well with me.

If I got upsized without asking I wouldn't come back. I heard Bojangles does that so I won't go there.

Tough luck on your job. It's probably a good idea to at least look for other employment.

Personally, I wouldn't usually be that bothered by getting a larger size order. But that might just be me, I'm a big eater.

If I get charged for a large and receive a medium though there'll be hell to pay.

Either way, the fact that your employers a. feel the need to do this and b. don't feel it's unacceptable to do is not a good sign.

Looks quite sketchy, I hope they can actually pay you. Good luck with your job search, run away from this one as soon as you can !

Normally, in my experience of bars & clubs, you’d be prompted to suggest to the customer that it’s a large drink/meal, but not to just go ahead and charge them for it.

having worked in customer service i don't think i can agree with that quote 😂 but the rest is valid. if they're ok cheating the customer, they'll definitely be ok with cheating you

Definitely sounds scetch, hope you have better luck with the next one.

"The customer is always right" is pretty much 9/10 times the opposite of what is going on in a service related job.
Worked one for years and the slow building hatred for people you get.

I'm well aware of how much of an asshole and an idiot the customer can be, I still give them the best service possible cause;
1. It makes them go away faster
2. A lot of them are just looking for fights so I deny them that
I know that enables bad behavior but it's only my problem when it happens on my shift.

Think they are being greedy for the sake of the restaurant not shutting down. Either way, continue looking for another job fs

the original quote is something like 'the customer is always right in matters of taste and preference', or to that effect. Some enthusiastic middle managers decided the latter half of the quote wasn't needed 😂

I found out something yesterday that might be the reason why so much shit is happening. A lot of the people there either come into work high, or they come in sober go get high on their break. At first I thought It was a few people who will get fired once a manager catches them or they'll just quit on their own like most potheads end up doing until I found out some of the managers are also doing that as well. After that I decided to quit before finding a new job because of how unprofessional it is.

Good on you for quitting. I hope you find yourself something stable, and even something that you enjoy if you're lucky enough!

Some people would see this as a golden opportunity but if you can find something you'll like better then hit the bricks

If you work in grocery or food service, you should look for more stable work. These are dying industries.

I worked as a shift manager for a locak grocery store for 8 years, and the store director started doing shifty shit. You are not valued, you are replaceable. These jobs are a dying type of job. No longer supported or looked at as important. Get out while you can.

Sad part is that in their eyes you are replaceable and they won't bat an eye in doing so.

Never worked food service, but I'd imagine that they have a in common with other demand based product's. Hours are probably tied to contract time and if you are hourly, being let loose early will cost them less. Smaller businesses do that all the time. And like other product based stores, you can go from doing OK to circling the drain within months of each other. Always have a backup plan and don't plan on settling into a job forever unless you see growth and security.
