discussion Is there a place to request game compression?

This may seem dumb to a lot of people but as someone whose internet is trash, there is nothing worse than going to download a game it being 5 + Gigs. I know to most this isn't a huge deal, but when a 16 Gig game takes 4 hours to download, it's nice if someone has taken the time to compress it down to 2-3 Gigs. I don't know if I'm even asking this in the right spot so if my post needs to be moved Just let me know and I'll be more than happy to fix it. Thanks to anyone who takes the time to reply to this.

I think he means that his through put is shitt, and has trashy download speed.. Not every ISP provide true so called high speed internet... SUCKS!!! I know .. In some areas here a 10 down 2-3 up is Pure "SWAG" and your doing good to get a third of that in real time...

I used to have a connection like that, but I don't mind leaving things overnight. But I'd rather have lots of small files than a big one, because by the time the big one has failed twice, I have 95% of the small ones and can complete the download quickly.

No I was referring to file compression. Taking image and text files and compressing them into archive formats without affecting the quality of the game once extracted. there is a small chance of breaking game if some inexperienced does it however, I've been downloading compressed games for years and have only had a few that was broken. aside from the small chance on breaking it, the only real downside is it reduces the quality of the images so they're not 4K or 8k or whatever people are running now.

There is only so much you can compress without loss, and most game installers already have this compression setup, so they cannot be compressed much more (maybe 1% if you are lucky). So if your problem is that your downloads get cut, your best bet is going to be a multi-part archive, but you need to tell you what size you can download reliably. At what size do most of your downloads get cut? Were all the cut files more than 100MB? 300MB? Once we know that, we can take the big downloads which give you problems and cut them into pieces for you to download and re-assemble.

Disassembling a game to re-encode the textures is going to be much more difficult and time consuming (if at all possible), but doing the file split is trivial so you will get more volunteers.

No, nothing gets cut on my internet, my download speed is just slow as molasses. I don't really know how else to explain what I'm talking about without mentioning F95 (Pls don't get mad about mentioning another site). F95 has members of the community who have permission to upload, and the badges labeled uploader, compressor, and so on who will take a large game with high quality images and compress the files further than the game dev did using some super-secret spy software (Only a little sarcasm) and make the game a smaller download, the image quality decreases but when the Images start at 4k or 8k and are brought down to 1080, I as someone with a 1080 monitor can't see a bit of difference anyway. Idk If I'm more ignorant than I realized but I didn't think this subject was so far out of left field.

I never thought re-compressing textures was a thing. Once we get enough people from F95 here, they can do the same thing here, I guess.

Not textures, just image size and quality. Just something that is done for larger games so people have less to download.

The images which are used within the game are loaded into the game memory and then transferred to the GPU for visualization. Once they are on the GPU they are called textures, and by extension, normally the game assets which end up as textures are called textures, also when they are stored on disk. We are talking about the same thing.

Just as a note, I didn't know the difference between a texture and an image either. I am glad we are all on the same page now though, I thought I was going a bad job of describing what I was talking about.

all i can say as a helper is that this is a game sharing site , none of the games belong to us or are stored here. we simply share where to get the games from so its down to the people who post the games how they post them, think of this site more like a phone book, we share the numbers but not how many numbers are in the persons contact details (showing my age a little)
