A question for people that are more close to the visual novel development:

With all the improvements we got with AI over the last of years (chatgpt, dalle, stable-diffusion, etc) how are the devs using this in visual novel development? One thing that comes to mind is to use something like ChatGPT to help either write or at least review the script. But what other things? Do people really use image generation for the backgrounds? Do we maybe have some AI that deals with 3D models or something (that I'm unaware of)? Has AI actually improved the way VNs are made?

Interesting questions. I'm not a fan ai images in a game, but I see no issues in using it for a background. Not sure about script writing but could be useful for translations to make sure the grammar is correct and appropriate for the situation. You can even talk to chat gbt in hexadecimal code and it will be suprised and respond to you in your preferred language so I'm sure it can help with translation.

I think they Could use for better dialog, short animations for sex and non sex scenes. And of course for better realistic images

One thing that comes to mind is using it to draft the scripts. Like you can describe the scene you want and it will help you write a draft of the script. Of course you need to edit later, but at least gives you some starting point.

Great question — AI has definitely made a noticeable impact on visual novel development, especially for solo or small team devs. Here's what I've seen or heard being used in the scene:

1. Writing Assistance (ChatGPT-style tools)
Many devs use AI to:

  • Brainstorm story ideas or branching plotlines
  • Draft or expand dialogue quickly
  • Review tone and consistency across different character routes
It’s not a full replacement for human writing, but it speeds up iteration and helps overcome writer’s block.

2. AI Art (Stable Diffusion, DALL·E, etc.)
Yes, AI-generated backgrounds and even character sprites are becoming more common — especially for devs who can’t afford custom art. Some use AI to:

  • Generate placeholder art for prototyping
  • Create full art assets with some post-editing
  • Design concept art to guide commissioned artists

3. Voice Synthesis
Some devs are experimenting with AI-generated voices for characters. It’s still hit-or-miss in terms of emotional range, but for internal testing or minimalist voice-overs, it works surprisingly well.

4. Music & Sound FX
AI tools like Suno or Riffusion can generate ambient tracks, background loops, or minor sound effects that help flesh out the atmosphere.

5. Asset Upscaling & Cleanup
Tools like Topaz Gigapixel or AI upscalers are often used to clean or upscale older art, including reworking public domain or early-gen VN assets.

6. AI for Programming Helpers
Some devs even use GPT-based tools to debug Ren’Py code, suggest logic improvements, or create simple systems like inventory or branching flags.

So yeah, AI isn’t replacing the creative vision, but it’s absolutely empowering smaller devs to produce more polished or complete projects faster — especially for solo VN creators who don’t have the budget for big teams.

Would love to hear if anyone’s used it for animating sprites or implementing voice emotion layers — that seems like it could be the next step.

As a creator of an AI-powered VN, i can say that it is an enormous catalyst, but it has its issues. I also tend to include AI-generated animations, not just images.

Advantages
  • AI can be much fast than creating scenes by hand. Sure you can also download finished models and scenes and go shortcuts as a 3D artist, but with AI at least images are a total no brainer.
  • AI can create stuff that is almost impossble to create or animate as a 3D scene. Explosions, super abstract stuff, highly detailed crowds and extremely populated backgrounds. Where 3D-powered games often feel a bit "too clean" and empty, AI is great for creating vivid backgrounds
  • Creating music and sound effects is also great with AI, even combining video and sound (lipsync or creating sound based on videos) really works very good already
  • AI can also support in the creative writing: Making creative suggestions, correct typos or translate better than the alternatives
  • yes AI can help very much with programming. i admit i used it for that too
Disadvantages
  • acceptance: Many just hate AI and won't accept it no matter how good the result is
  • consistency: THE main issue with AI is creating characters, scenes and clothes with a decent stylistic and substantial consistency. A tolerance for little deviations is required - by the audience. This issue can be managed with tools and a lot of effort, but not completely. Especially when creating videos, NSFW and extremely detailed and specific SFW scenes, very different models perform best in each discipline - and while each individual result might be impressive, what these different models put out often does not look very similar to the human eye. This is currently my main issue.
In my eyes, AI allows a new bunch of creatives, ones who for whatever reason are not very much into 3D art, to create games with increasing quality. If you tolerate and work around its weaknesses, it also creates a chance to create new stories with impressive visuals. You still need good concepts and a good story, but AI can really be a great tool to support the whole creative process.

We will see very many AI-powered VNs in the future. If they are good or bad will depend on the creative mind behind them.

An interesting thing I stumbled across is image converters, to take an illustration and try to make it more realistic, there are a few out there. One I have on Comfy UI is pretty good, and every now and then produces an image that is straight up amazing, but it is kinda spotty, one minute making a fantastic upgrade, the next failing utterly;

There are likely better ones out there, but I don't know how to get them to work properly as they have far more complicated settings, and I can't be arsed to figure them out just for the playing around I've been doing. But for a dev looking to improve the end quality of their art - that is, starting from something they made - it may be something they want to think about.

I know one dev is also planning to use AI more for his animation work as he says he can get far better results, and faster, than doing it himself. He makes his own art, so I'm assuming he is taking hos own images, and using AI to animate them. Some of his work would likely trigger an online AIs Charlie Papa detectors, so he must be running it local.

as a previous poster here said, short animation is a good use for AI. it may advance even more very soon and be creating a whole VN for us at some point.

i will say that i do not think the writing quality is at a point it is "good enough" for a VN. this is very subjective, many VNs have worse writing than an AI could put out. i am sure we all have encountered one or two like this before. the AI after all is trained on others writing online, seems to have a penchant for fan fiction especially.

i do not believe it is advanced enough to entirely replace content in a visual novel. images it can do, but the style usually is very similar across all ai made content without so much tweaking that consistency is hard to maintain once you are getting images that deviate from the typical "slop" look we are all no doubt familiar with. this is personal preference, but i do not find the ai art-style appealing enough to enjoy it in more than one or two VNs a year.

i can definitively say ai is not anywhere close to replacing fully animated sex scenes. most ai services online will decline your requests for such things and the barrier for entry to generate video locally, especially those past the usual 5 second length that you see with models like WAN, is extraordinarily high if you want decent quality results that do not take many minutes for one generation. rising RAM prices are only making this worse. you also have to baby-sit the AI and play what many in the community call the "seed lottery" in the hopes of getting a generation that is of passable quality. i have seen good stylized AI generations of pornographic content, but they use an image (commonly made by a human) as input first and do not typically exceed the 5 second limit. they are also a rarity and who knows how many rolls of the "seed lottery" the generator had to do, sitting through what could be hours of generations, depending on hardware, to get something acceptable.

as a companion tool i think it is serviceable, it can provide some tips for writing, scene composition and such. the music generation also is not awful from a small sample i have heard. it is quickly advancing, so if it does not hit a hardware or training dead-end then maybe it can give us something better in the next few years.
