Hello everyone,

joined a few days ago and thought to make a thread before I disappear, only to now and then post in the lurker thread or something.

I’m not sure how active I’ll be here, my presence will probably wax and wane more than the moon. My interests shift just as fast: big to small and back again, no matter if up top or down below. Similar it can shift from top to bottom, regardless of gender and relation. Some days I can get fascinated by almost anything; others, nothing holds me for more than two minutes.

The one thing that can be counted on is that my computer is a potato, an ancient one at that. It’ll be old enough to vote soon. It had a few upgrades over time, but don’t expect me to run anything that demands slightly modern specs.

Your computer’s almost 18 years old? Is it running Windows XP or something? It probably still has the original Doom on it!

I think you are misremembering when doom was released... that was over 30 years ago. Now you are probably suffering from a 'damn I am getting old' moment. Just like me.

Yes I had a machine with the original Doom on it, also Duke Nukem 3d and Quake 1. I wasn't into fps games, but it is what was played during most lan parties in addition to rts games. For those that don't what that is: Lan parties are when a groud of people (during my time, only teenage boys) meetup with their computers (and heavy crt monitors), throw lan cable from one room to the next (mostly coax at my time) and play games against or with each other. This can go on for a few days, maybe a week or two; showers and hygiene optional. It's what we did because we did not have internet, or at least not a 24/7 connection.
That old machine got scrapped when I built this one, I think I only took the harddrive as a backup storage for a while and maybe used the sound and ethernet cards before i switched to the onboard ones. My machine barely runs windows 10, started with 2000, swapped to 7 when it was available and jumped to 10 during covid. It is not capable of running 11. For the main hard drive (no ssd) I am now on my third one, 2nd graphics card, upgraded to 8gb of ram (ddr2 iirc) about 10 years ago. Some other, minor updates here and there and we are at the current state.

I have a runnning XP Pro box that I keep around for a small decated lable printer, and scanner on occation. I also still have a whole raft of ariginal CD's of thinga like the original Doom, and Quake. Also Halflife on CD with the crack to load it onto the HD to run without the CD in the tray...
