discussion Hero or demon lord

Bad guys are rarely well written unfortunately. Even in some of the best RPGs around the bad guy route is often some poorly constructed and motivated psychopath. So I usually default to hero. But I am certainly interested in games with bad guys done right.

Both are boring, flat, and shallow in most cases; I prefer the anti-hero, who is less shallow, or the villain with a motive.

I prefer when games give me enough freedom of choice to do what I want when I want, rather than sticking to an archetype. Sometimes, situations call for heroism and patience. Sometimes, not so much.
