I would recommend Renpy games like "Dating my Daughter" or "Sisterly Lust"... it is a easy concept of, you have to choose the right answer to get points. The easiest of Gameplays. See other games as the same but with bigger Steps to acquire the wished outcome.

What is "the genre" anyway?

AVGs are much more of a broad medium then a concrete genre. Some level of knowledge of their kinks would be needed.
Without such knowledge I'd stick with something more vanilla and/ore pretty varied that is relativly bug free, probably something like SummerTime Saga, which is light on the incest and pregnancy is relativly avoidable.

If you like your games consensual and inclusive I'd recommend Come Home. Low on drama, good characters, wide variety of kinks, nothing too extreme, and everything's optional. I'd characterize it as a mix of dating sim and AVN.

For Japanese VNs, there's no better starting place than Katawa Shoujo, even if the game itself isn't Japanese, it's got the tropes, the artstyle, etc.

If you get it from there, don't forget the patch, albeit I myself can go without H-Scenes (*cough* KANON/AIR *cough*), some people might not be able to so best to remind that.

I'd say Summertime Saga is a simple game that doesn't go too extreme on anything. It's simple and has at least some simple sandbox gameplay. It's just worth noting they get the 20.16 before rework version.
