Was in the Anti-social thread and we mentioned Goku, Naruto and Luffy and that got me thinking...
I don't much care for the newer shonen but oldies (I FEEL OLD NOW) like Naruto, Bleach, Dragon Ball.. those I love.
So I was wondering what's you people favourite Shonen Manga?

Also Slam Dunk, that one is a masterpiece and doesn't get enough love

I really don't like Shonen as a genre.

Shonen mangas are usually quite brain dead and always trying to justify squeezing in yet another barely attainable power level increase, drag out the story line in pointless directions to continue their serialization contract, and refuse to ever be sincere in matters of emotions unless it pertains to anger or envy - two emotions I don't particularly care for. I gag everytime 'the boyz' in a shonen decide to have a heart-to-heart by having yet another 4 chapter fisticuffs instead of taking the opportunity to just talk to each other and flesh out their characters.

Having grown up of Naruto, Dragon Ball and One Piece I hate all the practices these mangas normalized. You can really feel that already back then the authors would just throw stuff at the wall until something got booked for the monthly or weekly Shonen Jump or equivalent, and until they hit that success they didn't much care about to long-term story so they had to ad-lib once they finished the first few chapters because they had no plans to go beyond that when they first started.

I feel that's a bit generalising, sure they can devolve into a testosterone-filled power fantasy but the stories and character moments can be solid.
And sure there are plenty of titles that are afraid of feelings (specially before Kenshiro taught us that crying IS MANLY) but other characters like Naruto experience and show emotion openly.
Envy and anger are a part of the human experience and can be a good way to connect with a character specially if you can see the character grow beyond them or improve themselves because they felt these feelings.

That being said, they do ad-lib the plot a lot, but I would argue that it's more because of the weekly publishing getting to them and the pressure of the editors to change things up.
Sooo What are your favourite titles? Not shonen or anything :)

Cute girls and women doing their best.

As a Latino, I'll have to say dragon ball, I admit it can be over the top especially in super, but nothing can't compare to Dragon Ball AF and their ''Escencia''

Well, I read manhwa or manhua, but I stick with two: Solo leveling and immortal swordsman in the feminist world.
I hardly read this demographic, I read more seinen but manhwa.

Easily Hajime no Ippo, its more grounded and i love the humor style in it
Great taste, that's a classic!

My personal favorite has to be Gintama. I used to watch it a lot back in the day and it still takes me back to better times whenever I watch an episode.

D-Gray Man or one piece.
Kind of hard choosing one when there are so many great ones.

The only korean author I like is Boichi (Sun ken Rock) and he publishes in Japan, I'll look those up

I started it a couple of times, it's good, but just so looong

I might give gintama a read, never called much to me but sure I'll trust a random person on LC

But the art in One Piece gets just so messy  sometimesI don't even understand the action.

Tbh for both of One Piece and D-Gray man I've never read the manga.
and I've " Only" watched some 550-600 episodes pf One piece. and of those the fist 300 were my favorite. At the time I was watching it as it released and the anime was just not doing it, some 5 minute recap of the last episode, than repeating animations that really weren't so great and felt like they were just trying to pad watch time.
I had thought of switching to the manga but then I was going to need to read it from the beginning to get the full manga experience and the show is what I loved, so now its been ten year and I've never watched it since. If it does end up getting completed in the next coming years I'll probably watch the whole thing start to end through the one pace project.

D-Gray man is sad since the Mangaka got sick and started releasing chapters really slow so the show created its own ending. I think it releases 1 chapter every 2 months, now its 1 a month, but manga chapters really aren't long.

Does OPM count as Shonen? Coz that's my answer

Yu Yu Hakusho or HxH. I would say it's leans more to HxH

Dragon Ball/Z/Super, it is not the best by any means especially by today's standards, but it innovated a lot and many shonens nowadays exist thanks to it.

Hajime no Ippo and One Piece, my favorite manga is Monster but that's a Seinen

one piece is my fav personally and it has tonnes of episodes as well
