I think that part of the problem is that the code was getting so janky that the game was falling apart. I remember playing the updates as they came out, and with Mr. C's patches it was usually okay. If you start playing the game from the start, however, in the late mid-game if you didn't play in the same sequence as the updates came out (this is a sandbox game) then certain wrong scenes would trigger or skip ahead.
