Breadth or Depth: Preferred story structure

Do you prefer games with breadth or depth?

Breadth means a lot of girls/characters to interact with. Harem games are like that typically, but there are others outside of the harem genre in which a character can be conquered after one or two interactions, and there a lot of such characters.

Depth means one or two girls/characters with long storylines. Slow burn games, for example, or those heavy with romance elements.

Finding the right balance between love interests is crucial. Too many options with little backstory can feel superficial and leave people unsatisfied. Conversely, a single love interest with a rich, slow-burning narrative creates a more rewarding journey. To keep people invested, it's essential to offer a mix of both types. If the slow burn takes too long, however, players may lose interest and abandon the game.

This is precisely why I tend to steer clear of sandbox games; their tendency to become overly grindy doesn’t resonate with me

On the surface I prefer breadth, but the games I remember the most/enjoyed playing the most had depth and only a few characters. Once there's too many characters I often end up skipping through content because I can't remember enough about the story between updates.

Depth for me. With some devs it feels like their first love is character creation, every update has to introduce a few new characters.
When breadth is taken to the extreme a game becomes extremely confusing, theres so little to seperate the charaters but the dev expects me to keep track of them all.
I prefer it when the dev make an effort to really characterise the existing charaters instead of getting bored and creating some more

Depth definitely for me. I always find it annoying when I see a game I love a few characters in but the dev keeps adding more and never gets back to the original ones which I got into the game for. It also becomes much harder to flesh out any character if you can't get enough time to even get to know one of them before another is introduced.

I prefer to have both if possible but depth on story and stuff in the story is important to me

I prefer a bit of both—having several characters, but not so many that it gets overwhelming, and with a decent amount of development for each.

If you choose one thing, then of course depth. But, of course, it is better to have both.
