Hello - I don't like sandbox games because i don't find it fun or exciting to click around and look at empty rooms, or not knowing what i'm supposed to do next. That being said, I think a lot of that might be that i've only played bad sandbox games, because honestly, who would like that? So what is the best, the gold standard of sandbox games, the game that will let me understand why sandbox can be an enjoyable game?

thanks!

HailDicktator if you like bdsm.
TheHeadmaster
School, Love and Friends
Horton_Bay_Stories_Jake The main girls are hot ugly but there a lot of side one that are not.
The_Spinney If you like real porn.
There more that are ok so ask if you like me to add them.

The only kind of sandbox game which I was able to cope with was "Bound by Lust"

When I was little, my sister would put a blanket over me and a snorkel in my mouth and bury me in the sandbox. I would then RISE FROM THE GRAVE!

We would usually try to scare mom with this stunt.

That was my favorite sandbox game. Might be a fun one for someone who doesnt like to play in the sandbox.

I don't think you'll find one. The best sandbox is no sandbox. It's always a hindrance when you have to shift focus from the linear-ish story into this incoherent chaos of buttons that don't do anything, the need to match certain time of day and/or weekday and of course the complete lack of information as to what can be done, because apparently no dev has ever played a sandbox game before, since they all do the same damn mistakes.

However there are few exceptions that barely are considered as sandbox, which makes them ok in my book:
  • Desert Stalker
    • You have a clear quest log, almost no need to roam around and markers are clearly labeled when there is an available quest on that location. Not to mention the story is excellent.
  • Lust theory
    • I don't remember for 100%, but I believe there was a free-roam in terms of you can choose which girl to pursue and you always had some event available. But don't quote me on this one, it's been a few years.
Also as @zark already mentioned the headmaster is rather fun if you are able to push through the free-roam clicking annoyance and some randomly triggered events

a big +1 from me for Desert Stalker, such a good game with an excellent and fresh story.

Remember some more that work as sandbox games: the LOP games, even if they might lack in depth, the sandbox grind is not bad.
The Anomalous Dr. Vibes could also be considered a sandbox.

Photo Hunt is as good as it gets, grind is pretty mild, specially if you didn't unlock achievements, but with mod is even better to find all scenes, and tell you when you should grind a character before going for another, stuff like that.

Totally agree with Desert Stalker. That's a fantastic game all the way around, zero grind, and it always lets you know where the next content is. It's barely sandbox.

Both Photo Hunt and Desert Stalker are good. It is nice when a Sandbox doesn't leave you guessing and has indicators and visuals for progress

Agree with Desert Stalker and Headmaster. I also like Harem Hotel. Hail Dicktator is good but I have not played the latest releases.

One game that kind of defied all the odds to become a classic:
Man of the House

Things against it:
- Unity instead of Renpy
- sandbox
- using models that have been seen in other games
But despite all that the grind isn't bad, there's scenes all around to make it enjoyable and it's completed.

I agree, it's a good game and grinding isn't complicated.
The Mist is the best sandbox I've played. I generally avoid sandbox games, but Mist is the most fun I've had playing that type of game.
Really? I started playing it but I didn't like the beginning at all and I deleted it

I couldn't finish playing desert stalker, I forgot to back up the savegame, but it's a very good game. I haven't tried Photohunt yet, I'm going to download it now and try it to see how it goes.

Photo Hunt has a decent hint system on the phone. Moochie's writing isn't the best, but it's quirky. Her renders are some of the best, however, I love those.

I actually enjoyed The Mist also but didn't quite consider it sandbox. It has been awhile but I remember it starting out a little slow. I really liked the art style though good scenes.

I'm not a fan of sandbox but Summertime saga, it's pretty cool sandbox game.

Hail Dicktator, Blossoms of Pleasure, and The Mist (if it counts) are the only three that I found myself enjoying. They all had interesting stories that were engaging enough to keep me interested, though the Hail Dickator story definitely had bits that I didn't love and had to slog through- but that's just because the story needed conflict.
