I'm thinking about artists who change character designs, sometimes for the better because they got better rendering skills or tools, and sometimes for the worse, like when they change a loli character to be older looking so they can get on the other site or they can keep their income on patreon or whatever.

Specifically I was re-playing Midlife Crisis and I was dumbfounded - the younger niece was a much better design. When the developer aged her up he also gave her a horrific fake tan that makes her look orange/brown, while still having the platinum blonde hair. It's a super weird design choice and totally kills the character.

Has a character design ever made a character MORE appealing to you in game? or ruined one?

I hate it. Playing a game means accepting the art, no change ever improved it. And devs who delolify charas end on my ignore list.

It depents.
I can understand making a smol look older to be able to monetize the game, but it's still stupid, at least offer 2 versions of the scenes then, one with the older and one with the younger as an inofficial patch.
Oh no... extra rendering time? The amount of users who will turn away from the game will hit harder than more time spend.

There are some cases when a redesign might be okay, for example if some glitches with the character model keep happening or if the character is on a different quality level than others.
But major a character design just to fit the future story/narrative is the next stupid thing. It just proves that the dev didn't had the story in mind and is just doing what he wants.

I do it all the time and really haven't had any complaints. I've done it 3 times in my game Extra Credit.

Damn, nice progression on that art.

A lot of the games I've played already have gone through re-designs by the time I get to it. However, there was one, gotta search my files for this, it was abandoned, ... stand by ... , Sylphine. The first re-design, I really liked. Then he was re-designing them again, one of the ... 4 (or 5) LI was an improvement, the other 3 (or 4) got worse and the mom got way worse. Then he decided to totally scrap the game he was doing and use those new re-designed characters in a very different game.

Most of the times, when a game goes through character re-designs, it's a key indictor that it'll be abandoned.

I am having to do just that. My original models for Family Way were all Genesis 3 based. I am trying to get upgraded models in G8 or G9 that match. I think I did ok, but not ready to reveal them just yet. :D

Personally I think 3.0 is the best

I don't know though might just be the rooster talking.

If it is an artist improving their skill it is fine. It is jarring when they go in a different art direction that feels worse.

These seems like improvements overall, good work. Now I am gonna check out your game had not seen it before, don't let me down with your writing boast! ;)

All the redesigns for this game that I've seen was awful. But it was really sad that the game was abandoned. It had potential, I liked it.

Sexy original, but the downgrades are nothing for me.

I'm of mixed opinion on this topic. There are times where it is caught early on and does improve the overall look for the game.
Other times it feels needless and only ends up resetting the progress of a game so the rework can get their full attention.
Then there is the odd case where a character gets changed and looks so different you are left wondering if you missed their introduction.

There are times where it is needed but I find those to be few while it is more often than not unwanted.
There is the other side of the problem to look at.
Devs wanting their games to look like how they envision them, it's easier to keep moving forward when your happy with how it looks while it might deter them if they are not happy on how the product is looking.

Changing character designs is fine reworking is done a lot in games. I find most of the time they are a improvement, but you do risk losing some people who enjoyed the original.

True but as a daughter of Lucifer, she can change her appearance at will.. Nikki on the other hand is perfectly hot as she is

Changing a design is fine if it doesn't take away from the original game play or feel.

Its no different to keeping the character but changing the actor playing the character in a TV show. Sometimes it works, sometimes it does not. If like in Docs Game Extra Credit where the character is a demon, then shape shifting is almost expected at some point. But as Humans, there is no real way of explaining how an character suddenly changes so differently . Justy because you can change something doesn`t mean you should. After all you can steer ya car with ya feet. Doesn`t mean its a good idea

I think it can go either way. Usually when the dev is still getting better, and more experienced, some changes are usually for the better. Some, on the other hand, just change for the sake of change, maintaining the same overall quality of work, but with a different visual, and in those cases, the change can be for the worse.

sometimes they make it better and if not it goes sideways doing silly things like putting a weird hairstyle ending to be for the worse, but in the end, it depends on the person to person who sees it
