Your point about Contradicting Egocentric Motivations reminds me of a story.

When I was a Teen, and in my super edgy smartass phase, my Psychology teacher was trying to teach the subject of Alturism - Doing something for others with no benefit to yourself. Giving to the homeless, working at a charity, etc etc. And me, being a super edgy smartass as I've already established, argued with her that Alturism doesn't truly exist. We don't ever give without recieving. When we give to the homeless, it's to relieve a feeling of guilt or a feeling of empathetic sorry, when we work at a charity, it's to feel good about ourselves.

In truth, I still believe that "true" alturism doesn't exist - we always benefit - but, and this is why it ties in to your point, it doesn't fucking matter. Because doing a good deed is still doing a good deed. The two things coexist. What matters is the positive netgain for the people involved.

Then I got older and realised "Friends had already done it" in that episode where Pheobe gives money to Joeys Telephon thing. So, I wasn't as wisdomous as I thought.

Funny, I had a similar experience regarding altruism concept when I was a child (don't remmember how old) except It was not in class and was with myself (loved to think on the definition of certain concepts when I was younger) but the conclusion I came with was re-defining altruism for myself as I considered that if someone gained joy from doing good to others It was the true altruism exactly because he was gaining domething from It (or egoistical amability which I like more).
