I was just watching the recently released My Hero Academia Vigilantes spin-off a few minutes ago. It reminded me why for over a decade on why I refuse to pay for anime. As usual, I saw another anime get censored to appeal to the snowflakes modern audiences.

Typical anime industry with how adaptions continue to be trash. Usually the pacing is fucked up, the animation is lazy, content skipped, bad changes, censorship, etc.

If you can answer, why you pirate, or why you don't pirate anime.

I pay for commodity not like I agree with crunchyrroll/netflix/prime agenda but it's easier to cast or watch in multiple devices, I know adblock exist and turn arounds for most things but its easier to just pay a little. I usually pirate novels or manga but just cause doesn't exist something like crunchy and even there if I like enough I buy physical copies if posible. On the other hand I hate censorship and TBH I happily pay even more for uncensored content but as for today and modern agenda it's more likely end up in shady sities pirating the uncensored versions of said media.

No if i can't afford to buy a series officially or its unavailable too bad. Japan is crazy with censorship and cracking down on piracy these days. Same for manga if i don't buy it it's not mine to just take. If the industry didn't prosecute and send you to prison for anime and manga being shared sure knock yourself out.

Bootlegs for sale or imports is another story, I do collect physical media. But I strictly only buy official releases from Japan or the US. Streaming is a joke it's the worst quality for a premium price.

I'd just as soon collect Raw anime. Or search for a sub file for a blu-ray or DVD. Or collect my raw anime laserdiscs of old shows and the occasionally VHS OVA.

I don't like the SJW dubs, sometimes you have no choice you have to bear with it or outright boycott poorly translated manga and anime.

I think anime (or shows in general) needs to fall within certain guidelines in order to air at certain timeslots. Given that MHA is watched by younger audiences, I wouldn't be surprised if they toned down some of the "mature content", not that there's a lot. Sometimes, the Bluray release will make changes (remove censorship) if you weren't aware, so imo it's best to wait for Bluray release. Better quality, in addition, if fansub group decides to work on it, I would usually prefer fansubs over official. Official sometimes also doesnt have time to do good typesetting because they need to simultaneously release with the Japanese version.

With all theses factors, I usually wait for bluray release then pirate. Generally prefer torrenting since it's better quality as well. If it's really good and I want a physical copy, Ill buy the bluray. Otherwise, Id rather spend the money on merchandise (which I believe also supports the industry if that's important to you)

It's funny, I gotten to the point of being so used to watching animes on sketchy sites like kissanime that the thought of paying for anime made me have a double take. Now, I don't even know if I could start paying for anime, much less on sites like crunchyroll with their unreliable subs. Perhaps I would start paying for blu-rays where they show you all the uncensored parts, but I probably won't lol.

i pirate anime now, i use to buy the dvd's but the english va's, localizers and crunchyroll (funimation) have just turned me off from the english side of anime now. plus i feel that fan translations are more accurete and faster then waiting for something to show up. also didnt help that crunchyrolls video player was/is ass (not sure if it is still that way). you can look at what happened with interspecies reviewers where funimation got the rights released a few eps censored then just pulled it to make it so there is no was way to watch it legaly at the time (its not on crunchyroll even though funi is now part of em). then you have the fact that manga and anime get axed a fair bit in japan, d greyman is an example of where the anime just stoped but the manga continued, bleach is another example of this but did make a return years later.
ah another point is its kinda hard to buy/keep up with shoen anime when some of them seem to just go on forever looking at you one peice, detective conan, naruto, etc

Well I actually I have to pirate it. It is the only way to watch it with japanese subtitles and the only legal way is netflix but you can only find a few.

i wouldn't mind paying for streaming services if you actually got all the content. Since you don't though i just pirate it.

I think only 1 out of 5 people pay for anime

majority of anime is not on western streaming services

Tbf I also don’t pay for streaming services for any other media now that all these different platforms popped up. The cost is ridiculous.

For me Crunchyroll and Netflix taking over pretty much killed anime for me. I don't watch anything new. I have physical media for older things.

Crunchyroll prices are ridiculous for the few things they do release on physical media. Netflix releases almost nothing. Aniplex was always ridiculous before but with Rightstuf you could get sales. I hate monopolies in general, just like i hate how it's pretty much only Walmart or Amazon that own the space of the sale of books or DVD/blu-ray, 4k whatever. Less competition means higher prices. The death of FUNimation SJW dubs or not, and the death of Rightstuf means SONY/Crunchy owns the entire space.

What does everyone feel is the best way to sail the oceans as a swashbuckling privateer??

I’m not an anime fan (I don’t like that kind of graphics), but if I was interested, without the slightest hesitation I would download pirated copies (thank God, torrents work reliably), just as I download hacked programs or movies.
