I think animation would always be preferable if it's good. That said I'd take still images over jank animations any day. The increased Dev time is also an issue with animations

For me it's Azraesha from A House in the Rift. I love her playful and sarcastic personality. Her and the MC have great chemistry and play off each other really well.

WVM. The plot got more and more disjointed and telenovella levels of dramatic. On top of each update adding 15 new girls and still ignoring the established ones people actually like.
If it's there from the start I enjoy it. If it's added later on though i tend to mute it. Spending years with a character who's voice you've had for them in your head not matching the official one when it's added later feels jarring

If it's a best friend or girlfriend character that will be a main LI I think it's fine. If it's just a random one off characters I'd rather just not have a scene
Feel it's needed for most games, cause in certain lighting text is hard to read sometimes. That said every game should have an opacity slider. The fact that some don't is insanely stupid for how easy it is to add into renpy
