I sometimes lurk for text based games with male PCs and a femdom focus but I run into two major issues: The first is all of them using live action porn, but that's a whole other thread. The other one I find more baffling is the constant "sissification" theme. Anything that looks mildly interesting to me has that tag and it's another sticking point for me. I never understood why it's so common. Is there only three people making games like that or is it just kind of an unspoken rule of HTML text based games like that?

Yes, for some reason, so many games are aimed specifically at sissifying the main character. I'm not generally against this kind of fetish, but I'd like to see a version where the main character influences someone and feminizes them, rather than the other way around. And there's almost no "normal" female dominance in games, except perhaps in futa versions. Although it would seem there's so much hentai and other content on this topic out there, for example, in conjunction with shota. Incidentally, real porn in games is crap and hackwork.

I love HTML games and I can say with full confidence that the topic of sissification is not affected in all such games, but I agree that in many (up to 40% of all projects). This fetish is probably in demand (I don't understand it, but everyone has different tastes). As for media files. A lot depends on the developer's perseverance. Yes, some people may have 4-5 completely different actresses in one scene (it gets ridiculous - sometimes actresses are also of different races!), but there are developers who are very attentive to media content and all the scenes are very carefully adjusted. As an example, The Spinney (this is a RenPy game, but with real photos and videos Ren'Py - The Spinney [v0.29] [Dannot Games]), I would highlight From the HTML games these projects:

Just as a guess, while we group fetishes into tags everyone's actual preferences within that genre are different. "Vanilla" femdom is already served by real porn and other commonplace art, but my guess is sissification is rarer. People who are already being served probably are less inclined to put in effort to make something catering to their interests. Focusing your product on a niche is also a good way to get market share, since you only have to fill your particular audience's desires, not be the best quality product in general.

Femdom also shows up as part of other games since it's easy to add as a standalone, skippable scene. Sissification kind of has to be a major focus.

It's because those games have developed from a lineage of porn games that goes back a long time. It used to be that you could only find porn games that were either flash games, Japanese games, or TF (transformation) games. The TF game community has been making games about the same premise (you end up in some contrived situation where you are gradually turned from man into woman) since at least 2008. At least that's the earliest date publication date I found for a game on TFgames.site, which is the main gathering spot of that community.

Back in those days, 3D software was hideously expensive and difficult and took a real beast of a computer, and there were no game engines that were both decent and free. You couldn't even pirate a decent game engine. The best thing you could steal was Flash, which wasn't anywhere near decent. The free game engines were straight-up garbage fires and genetically closer to real-world Gonorrhoea than to anything playable. People actually preferred making games in the Warcraft III map editor (which is how DoTA was born). The only thing that was sorta available was RAGS, a way to play MUD (i.e. text) games but on a GUI. Nevermind the GUI looked like the control panel to an industrial pump station, it was something. And oh boy, did a particular demographic run with that something. You could even add images! As mentioned before, 3D was prohibitively difficult and expensive, and most people can't draw to save their lives, so the only convenient option was to just steal art or from other porn.

TF gamers, if you couldn't guess from the description earlier, are made up for a large part of trans people. At the time, the prospects for gender surgery were bad and the environment outright dismissive of transgenders, so it's not too surprising they took to making games about being literally transformed into a girl. Not all TF games have femdom, many even don't, but it's adjacent enough that it features regularly. Likewise, TF games have a broad spectrum of what is considered "transformation", going from simple cross-dressing to full-on drugs that trigger a chemical irriversible sex change that shrivels your dick right off. The sheer volume of games the TF community produced (relatively to non-TF games) back then meant that most western games were TF games, but if you were looking for either femdom or sissification, TF games were pretty much your only option.

In time, with the advent of Ren'Py and the porn game revolution that Akabur brought into motion, the share of TF games declined. But they've continued making games, and even in the face of better game engines like Ren'Py, RPG Maker, Unity, Godot, etc., many TF game creators have stuck to making text games to this day. At the same time many creators from the mainstream porn game scene have discovered TF games, especially those creators who were interested in femdom and sissification. So they've adopted much of the traditional TF game style, and this is why many text games have design elements and themes in common with TF games.

This, it felt like there was a specific history or lineage to them, and this confirms my suspicion. It's fascinating

I think that sissyfication is something you get naturally if you push femdom to the extreme, since dom is mote of a masculine trait and sub is more feminine.

Because bread tastes better than the key

But fr, I think some guy just did it as a one-time but it got views and then more people followed the trend to be "different"

Is it me or there are only text based HTML games that fall into this category?

the weird thing is it's only in super high demand for html games? like why not other engines where it's so rare
