The first one I ever played, and the one that started my journey was Leap of Faith by Drifty Games. It completely hooked me emotionally and actually brought tears to my eyes a couple of times. It was one of the few games that had me completely emotionally invested. If you haven't played it, I highly recommend it, but beware, it contains some pretty serious subject matter.
