Did you ever cry while playing AVNs?

Nope. A sad ending would piss me off instead. I heard about some of the shit devs that put unavoidable sad endings in and avoid them like the plague. A bad ending should only happen if the player totally screws the pooch.

Can't say that I have, not yet anyway. Closest I've gotten I've got it "awwww" moments for heartfelt reunions and other warm and fuzzy moments...but nothing really to bring me to tears. For story that aim to be sad, I just see as depressing and avoid or stop playing.

Leap of Faith. Great story. Wasn't expecting that the dev based on true story. Kinda liked the girl that "had the issues". I don't want to give away anything, and I don't know how to black out shit to hover over as a spoiler.

There are 2 that immediately come to mind.
The Coceter Chronicles- Tabitha's violation by the lake- not to mention actually screaming at the monitor.
and
OSiL- Molly's Story (& Video Will). THIS one was a devastating.

Didn't cry but like a lot of others, Acting Lessons has hit me the hardest. I was left feeling empty and gobsmacked for a while and didn't know what to even do with myself after that.

For players:
I remember that just two games made me cry. Active lesson and Leap of faith. How about you? Did a game manage to make you cry and which one? (Not because it is so bad )

For developers:
Do you get emotionally attached to your characters? Did you cry while writing the dialogues? Because I never thought that will happen but I cried three times already while writing the dialogues for my game and I can't be the only one.

No actually, that seems a bit Sus, generally it would be normal to cry afterwards if you know what I mean.

I wouldn't say that I have cried over an AVN but I do somehow always go for the girl whose the "hospital ridden dying girl" trope. It happens every time.

I've only ever seen that in 2 games one complete (OSiL) and one almost complete (Come Home.) She's not hospital ridden in Come Home and can pretty much do normal things.

It's very rare for games or in fact any media to make me cry. For games the requirements are roughly the same as for books: high literary quality and the right kind of emotional story. However, due to illustrations the immersion tends to be a bit better, so it's not as important that the quality is consistently high. In other words, unlike a book, a visual novel can have this effect on me even if it has some immersion-harming annoyances such as poor grammar.

Even so, the only visual novel that I can remember right now to have made me cry was My Bully is my Lover.

That 4chan game Katawa Shoujo was rouugghh. Probably the only game that had me sobbing.

For me it is the opposite. I am a drama mama and cry way to often. 😂

NO

I ugly cried in Harem Hotel at Ashley's childhood flashbacks. For very personal reasons.

I once accidentally slapped by nuts when playing my skin flute while playing an AVN. Tears were definitely pouring then. Does that count?

On a serious note, it has only happened twice, and it is because the vast majority of AVNs just fail to make me completely engage with characters. Instead of feeling like I'm taking part in their story it just feels like I'm reading a script.

I feel that. But to be fair. It is not really easy to archive that. :giggle:

Can't say I ever cried over any of these games....but one that made an impact on me was a stupid little game called "Hi Emi". A seriously sad as f*** story, put me off these games for a few days.
