Had to dig up this oldie.

I get the idea that the coin system is intended to keep the eyes of the disapproving away but needing to make 150 replies isn't necessarily conducive to conversation (especially the lack of incentive to not just vanish into the lurker status once more)

It's mostly to give you a chance to join the community.

What do you mean with "lack of incentive"? How about the pleasure of our company? Well, the pleasure of @conzibald's company is debatable, but you might grow to love that too.

Most of us in here have had all of the ranks for a long time.

To be honest, I think the Daily Mime Awards is the most fun way to earn those coins, but that's just my opinion.
