I tried Replika a few years ago. It was interesting, though the short memory sometimes really made the conversations strange. I got the subscription for lewd chat, and it would even do age play. Then the devs removed all lewd, lost a ton of subscribers, added it back for people subscribed before a certain date, and my sub had a week or two left so I tried it but it was still somewhat nerfed, no age play or incest play. Just let the sub lapse.

Also was never sure there wasn't a log somewhere of the chats.

AI roleplay is pretty fun. The best way to do it is running the models locally, because even if they say otherwise, every single online service is storing your chat logs and using them how they see fit.

My experience using AI, is that the longer the conversations go, and the more tokens the chat uses, the more likely the AI goes off on tangents and strays away from the story. I think work still needs to be done to give AI the full treatment, but i mean the future is exciting on that front.

I have. I tried using one for a fun roleplaying narrative. It isnt good at advancing the story or describing the world, its memory sucks and can't remember who it is, and if I describe a scene it just repeats what I wrote back to me in dialogue. I can't be arsed to pay for the "premium" version because 90% chance it will disappoint and I'll just be out my money. Has anyone found a good one?

I worry about the privacy aspect, so something like Novel AI works for me for now, even though it is different than a chatbot.

Yes If I had to pick the worst flaw of AI chatbots its their lack of memory or their absolute acceptance of anything you say, most of them are unable to disagree with you and that really takes away a lot of the experience.

Until they are less forced to follow their prompts and forget things quickly they feel too uncanny and weird.

Usually models with higher parameters are better. The issue comes with larger context lengths where the AI shits the bed after long conversations. There is also a limit with current designs which don't keep track of information in an effective manner. I am curious if in future more agentic solutions will be used for roleplay bots. Maybe an agent to keep track of the current environment details and another agent to roleplay a particular character.
