Yeah, it's weird how different some laws can be between the states. Also, keep in mind that some of those limits aren't just the number, but both parties need to be under a certain age for it to be that age. It's complicated.

From my understanding Romeo and Juliet laws are for the situation of two minors dating and getting older

So for example two 17 year olds start dating, one has their birthday in January the other in October, for like 10 months an 18 year old is dating a 17 year old, but it's given leniency and not prosecuted since they were already dating before, it would be kinda dumb to tell them to break up for 10 months or something.

Of course I gave the example of two 17 year olds, but what what if one was 17 and the other 16? or 15? not sure if this is a defense the couple has to claim, or if it's fine so long as the parents don't press charges or something, don't know how much leniency there is.

Seems like such a silly law, instead of just having a minimum age of consent. Outside the us, laws all seem to be minimum consent age, with some having a parental clause that would allow it or not.

That was my understanding of how the laws worked as well, since often times people will turn 18 their senior year of high school and you shouldn't go to jail just because your girlfriend was a grade or two below you (or vice versa).

There is also that, also changes depending on the place as Whinegummi's link shows, any sexual act with people under 14 for example is always statutory rape in some jurisdictions, in that the minor does not have the ability to consent even if they wanted to, in the end this is a bunch of politicians trying to write laws that don't just throw normal horny teenagers doing normal horny teenager stuff.

When I went to high school there were definitely some 14 to 17 year olds fucking, and I remember 3 cases of teenage pregnancy, though I only knew one of the girls.
