I looked into the other boycott examples, and while I can see why the DND one succeeded, I'm a bit confused as to why a clothing chain had to bow to a specific political side...

I think its more of an issue of what is being lost vs what is being gained.
If boycotting is only causing you to loose 2% of sales, but giving into the boycott will cost you 0% of sales, you give into the boycott (though companies generally try to phrase it as best as they can).

simple. companies' goal is to make money. If half your customers get mad at you and throw a tantrum, you lose half your income. That goes for either side.
Always remember, companies aren't there to 'have your back' on whatever opinion you have. theyre there to take your money, that's all they care about.
