Does Anyone Else Drop a Game When Old Saves Don't Work?

If its Ren'Py, usually I try to edit the game to force it to use the same save (Many times the saves is only broken because of dev laziness, not because there was much change).
If it doesn't work, I usually do the same as the above user. Just ignore it for a while and come back when there's more content and I already forgot most of the story anyway...

Eh, I won't drop it if the game is decent enough for another playthrough and I don't have to skip half the damned game to get to where I was. I can tell you right now that if it was something with tons of text like LiL or if something like Harem Hotel had no walkthrough or cheats, that motherf'er is gettin thrown from the 15th floor of the nearest building and forgotten like it never existed.

depends on why the save doesnt work and how long ago i last played it, if its because of bugs or a glitch and i cant just hold down the skip button to get back to where i was? ill probably drop it for a few updates or so to let my memories of it decay a bit,

I feel like the good developers usually make it where old saves don't work only if they've added enough new content or functionality to the game to make it worth playing from start again. For those who are good but where that's not the case, they'll often leave an option to start from the newest update. Taffy Tales is a great example. There are some exceptions and if the games just not the compelling, I don't return to it either.

Only if the game is too long or just not good enough, i usually just use an autoclicker and skip up until where i was.

Unless the dev says "saves don't work" (and it's just the posters) I just Load from back a few choices (I save at every choice) or end of previous update.

If I can't, that's one strike. Three strikes, you're out.

Unless it's Sandbox. I don't like Sandbox to begin with. Takes a lot for me to ignore that tag. If Sandbox, ONE strike you're out... which... paradoxically... it's more likely to have saves not work on Sandbox than VN.

Pet Peeve on multiple sites, not just this one: Hey Devs/Mods. Would you please NOT just say "Saves won't work. You have to start a new game." but say:
"Saves won't work as of Version X.XX. You have to start a new game." You have no idea how many websites keep the Saves Not Work up... and I don't know if it's the current version? Last version? 3 versions ago? And Heaven help you if you ask in a thread because you'll get "Hurr! Durr! Read the OP! LOL!"

Then I respond in kind.

Hey, I did admit I get kicked out of boards a lot.

Well if I'm there for the fap then i would at least try to check the forums if anybody has posted a save file if not I just go and use RPA viewer so i can see the images

No necessarily about saves, but I, too, already fell from some note about past updates that weren't true anymore but weren't removed from the thread.
Warnings about save I usually just ignore, since many games I played it was a question of just renaming variables and it worked fine.
Some games are fixed just by adding an if/else or try/except block, but most devs don't know the basics in programming (and neither try to know it), so they just tell us to star over and that's it.

depends on how long i have invested into the game and how much i like it , if its a game i really like them im willing to replay as long as its been like around 2 hours but games im just meh on if its longer than an hour ill prolly drop it and wait till completion

If a game is of interest to me, I never quit. Mystwood Manor was played from scratch 4 times for this reason, I don't regret it.

If its a game worth playing, then I'll fast-forward on auto, from the start. Its just a pain when you have to make a choice and you can't remember what the dialogue is beforehand, to determine what choice you need to make. At this point, I backtrack and try to halt before the choices. to read the dialogues.
Normally, old saves won't work if the Dev has changed their version of ren,py, or if you've used a Mod update. However, there were a couple of games (can't remember which) that persistently changed on each update, which I eventually dropped.

Starting from the newest update isn't really an option when it's really a game (where choices matter.)

Definitely agree, but I also feel like true games like that that are done well try to add enough new content or features to make it worthwhile to replay from the start if you have to and not just make it like you're replaying the identical game, scenes, and encounters. Witchtrainer can be like this, though it's up to you if the new content justifies. I've seen a few games with choices where they go by the honor system if you start from the newest update and as you questions about previous encounters to fill the variable... i.e. after milking the cow, did you eat out the milkmaid or did you finger the farmer's wife to an orgasm :-) I've seen a few of those, but I can't think of any names off the top of my head.

Having said that, if the game makes you redo from start with no added scenes, gameplay, etc., it my chance of replaying gets smaller and smaller. Every game gets a one-time pass after the first few updates incase they need to overhaul their game structure one they're a few updates in and notice some flaws ;-p

If it's a game I put a lot of time into I might get frustrated at the thought of having to replay old content, but in general it depends on how grindy the game is.

Of course when it asks those questions, if it's well into the game, there's a good chance you'll forget. I've seen ones that did total bullshit - make a part 2 that completely ignored the player's previous choices.

Is certainly not a deciding factor for me, but something to take into account and for which I can be more or less tolerant depending on the game's nature (Vn's are definitively harder to accept that other, more complex games in this regard).
