I wonder which game made you aware of the genre. Were they harmless games with nudity or porn games?
To be honest, for me it was a strip poker game on the Amiga (that's a computer from the 80s that had great graphics capabilities - probably hardly anyone remembers it). But I got into games with a storyline a few years ago when I discovered a game in which the protagonist had to share a room with his niece. It was heavily text-based and graphically not that exciting.

This came out when Playstation 2 was still a hit. The game Playboy. Pretty sure it was made by Heffner's Playboy company. It was similar to The Sims but you were a photographer. Talking to and taking sexy photos of women was the only goal.

For me, it was either Frank's Adventure, or the Meet and Fuck games, on Newgrounds. Also played a ton of dating sim games there, can't remember any specifics though.

If you are talking more along the lines of visual novel games… don't remember which I first played (definitely as hentai game that required some effort to apply a translation), and first Renpy game was definitely DMD.
