From the other site:

You must be registered to see attachments

And since LC gets the game links from sites such as the other site, I figured I'd post it here to give players a heads up.

PS.. Scan your system. (y)

-edit-

To check if you've been infected, navigate to: C:\Users\<your username>\AppData\Roaming\RenPy\ and look for a folder called bin.
If it's there, then the code ran, and you're potentially infected with malware.

-edit2-

Seems different games put the virus into different locations (as they're coded differently)
One puts it into the above (appdata\roaming\renpy\bin) and another puts an .exe directly into the /game folder of the game you're playing.

List of infected games (updated)

Another game has just been added to the list:

On this topic, this seems as good a place as any to ask... Any recommendations for a Virus/Malware scanner?

I use Bitdefender (payed version... I do not believe in free ones ;))

Damn I really should be more careful... I mean I don't use this OS install for anything but this kinda stuff, so I'm in no particularly great danger... does make me feel like getting used to running everything through linux with wine though

I use this Computer only for this. And games. No personal things like shopping banking or anything else .
I use a every time activated VPN. It blocks all non VPN traffic. That VPN blocks malwaresites/ social media/ tracking sites.
A extra router with extra Wlan only for this computer.
So everything else will not be affected,
Games extracted first in sandbox and check malware.
Am I paranoid?
a little but better safe than sorry

There really are advantages to maining Linux. Even though some games might be a bit more of a hassle to get running, at least I don't have to worry about being infected with a Windows virus.

I like protonVPN, mainly cause they are the ones less advertised. To my mind, the less they spend on marketing, the more they have to make an actual good service.

That said, please know what you're getting into with a VPN, there is a lot of misinfo out there. Generally for this sort of site (and for sailing the high seas) I would recomend having one though.

Well it seems you're doing it right.
If a PC in the LAN gets infected it is a problem unless you have a well configured hardware firewall that manages it.
I suggest to always run the games in an isolated virtual machine, or alternatively (simpler but less strong) use Sandboxie or a similar software, then run the VN executables only inside the sandbox. A VPN only blocks IPs it already has in the database. You can always run the games in the sandbox, not just the first time.

Antivirus could not detect the Python scripts, they should detect (I hope) the active downloading or a dangerous routine. But a new malware could easily run undetected. I remind everyone that RenPy runs in Python, a simple extra script could write extra files and it won't be detected.

Can always go further into the security rabbit hole lol I think this is a good set of practices

Yeah this is starting to spread in several discord groups I am in as well. Hopefully, we can find out a way to prevent it from happening to others in the future. I also hope we figure out who really did this since I am sure a dev would not put something like this in their game on purpose.

I've used Avast for the last few years. They can get a bit annoying with the "Hey get our other stuff" but in general you can put it to silent mode and it works pretty well.

Usually WinDef works out of the box...

I've been using Mullvad for the last few years. Has always seemed decent to me.

I have the best antivirus in the world + the wrong drive letters, so there's no need to scan anything. :D
