So what makes a visual novel take long for each release?

Not to sound like a whiny patron, I'm just curious! :)

I encounter a lot of VNs where the release cycle takes 6 months. While I am itching to try to learn developing one as well, I'm really curious what consumes a lot of time in developing a VN. Most of the VN's I see use RenPy. Prior to posting this, I see on patreon and subscribestar that most devs will say:
  1. They are only doing this VN part time
  2. OR they are solo developers
  3. OR they are involved in Project B so they can't do much in Project A
Are the VN tooling or maybe running the renders taking time?
Or maybe something else you guys know?

1st you need to find the time to do it (so working around work/family/friends/personal down time/and anything life throws at you)
2nd you need to write the script
3rd you need to create the scene ((ie) in DAZ)
4th you need to render the scene*
5th you need to bug test
6th you need to upload (depending on game size, game builds and bandwidth, this could take a while)

3rd and 4th go back and forth
2nd to 4th is what takes up the time.


*Renders can take different times depending on the scene and PC specs.
Person A might be able to do one render in 5mins (using a RTX 4090), while with Person B it could take several hours (using a GTX 1050) to do the same render.

That's a lot of hidden steps that most people don't know! Maybe game development or software is just not my thing, but thanks for shedding light on this

I can imagine working on an adult VN when living with family or parents would be difficult to do because of the nature of the content. Oh gosh

All devs are retarded cucks that have no idea how to code or write.
Combine that with autism and a god complex and you know the answer.
It's the reason why 99% of adult games fail and why most games are trash.

i think its multiple reasons u want to deliver a good product first of u dont want any spelling mistakes, things that look off. also u want to be sure u have a good story line can folow up on. also alot of devs have another job/go to school. and sometimes they ran out of ideas and just have to think what to come up with

Ty for the answer (And your game :) ) I must confess ive had a decent Idea on he steps just not the time involved in them.
Is the time for rendering actual time thats taken for you or just some random numbers youve thrown as example?

When I first started my game I was using a GTX 1050 and each render took around 2-4hrs.

And if you noticed that after the render is complete there's a mistake (such as clipping, eyes looking the wrong way, black eyes or forbid the dreaded black screen), then you have to render it again (so another few hours..)

With my RTX 4090, renders take around 2-8mins each.

Such an amazing feeling going from 2-4hrs to 2-8mins.

Once devs get the rendering time down they think to themselves "Oh I can put more characters in a scene" and then it takes longer again.

Effort and Equipment. If a game's story is fully written before the first release it will be faster but many devs see the product after a couple of years and have to go back and fix the visuals of past chapters so they look as good as the stuff they are producing now.

The same things as writing a book, but then add art, coding, debugging, playtesting, etc.

Shit games get shit out every day and yet the few somewhat successful games are the ones that have been around for years.

I've done a lot of digging into the code of RenPy games, and have finally released a mod for public consumption. I usually just made them for myself. It's taking me forever to even learn steps 3 and 4. Trying to learn DAZ.
 
It all depends on the work ethic of the dev. Most of the porn devs severely lack it so their first few versions are great but after a while they will start delaying and making excuses why their games are always slow to develop and they need 5K per month to survive or they'll die of starvation

I'm obviously exaggerating but you and I both know that there is no accountability in porn industry. If you don't work at your job, or up to expectations, you will be fired. Sadly that doesn't happen here

They could release one update two years and suckers would gobble it up.. all it takes is the initial year or two to establish a following and then watch money coming in every month

For me would be the writing process.
Most working on this don't have anything ready (AND MOST CASES, IT'S VERY CLEAR), they have a general sense of what they want to achieve in the story, and don't know exactly how to achieve it.
You release a patch, and for the next patch you don't have anything ready, so you have to build up upon what you have already released.
Once you have this, you just have to follow, and this can influence pretty much anything, so the decisions you have to make along the way are the least relevant.
