Web site ads have been around since even before Al Gore started pretending that he invented the World Wide Web. It began with so-called "banner ads," that usually were at the top of a page. Then, someone invented "pop-up" technology and javascript and what have you, and those ads would just appear like magic out of nowhere trying to sell you something. They can be quite annoying, but they serve a purpose... paying the bills so the users don't have to. Alternative methods of generating website-supporting revenue include subscriptions, pay-per-use, and merch, of course, but that seldom sells enough to make much of a difference. Donations? Well... probably not.
So, which would you rather have LC do to remain on the web? Continue selling advertisement space (banners, pop-ups, etc.) or charge you a monthly subscription fee or a pay-per-login fee or a pay-per-download link fee, or something like that? I don't mind the ads, myself, and hardly notice them anymore.
