I used to absolutely despise music (and sounds) years ago (like idk 2018? probably before that) since it was always super cheesy and it distracted me. Nowadays I actually prefer if there is music. I'm not expecting some new stuff that I want to buy online and play in the car (especially not with my preference towards what music I enjoy) and I sometimes feel games with tons of effort (sometimes even SFXs added in early patches) that have no music to be kinda dull. Especially if it's with quite a bit of dialogue.

My true gripe with music however is when they pick songs with lyrics. I don't remember on the top of my head which AVN I was playing that had one track with male and female vocals (pretty bad ones I might add) and I've never been so quickly turned off, especially when some games don't bother with audio levels so you get a nice little earrape...

What do you guys think? I think the standard of AVN's has gone up quite significantly in the last few years and I kind of expect there to be music (sometimes even SFX to a degree). SFXs used to be really poor a few years ago (atleast from the stuff I played) but nowadays some games do it really well (top of my head Eternum for example). But I feel with music it's a lot less effort for the game creator(s).

neko paradise was one of those ones with lyrics in their music I believe, but as long as music doesn't have lyrics I'll leave the game open long after I've finished playing. only to be confused later when I don't know where the music is coming from...is good background noise.

The quality of music in general has improved over the years but I still usually turn it off and play my own. There are some exceptions but far and few in between. I also don't like when they don't separate the music from SFX.

Agree, worst thing is when some games (very few have this from my experience - more of an RPGM kind of thing) is sound for the text and that's then tied in with the other SFX's so you can't mute it.

I a little tired of hearing the same songs on every other game. There just isn't all that much out there for free or cheap that is okay to put in a porn game. As a bit of an aside, the game Last Oasis Before Chastity went an entirely different way. They just pulled songs they like and put em in there, fuck the RIAA. I'm talking NIN, Beatles songs, that sort of thing. Just actual good songs. I normally don't listen to BGM, but I do on that game. I'm guessing he'll have to redo it all for Steam, but for now, it's obviously the best BGM game out there.

Yeah I've seen some games do that where they don't care about the copyright (they probably shouldn't). Can be annoying to hear the same tracks especially through the years I've encountered the same ones but in recent years it got a bit better I think. Steam releases are weird to me, like are people buying this stuff on their steam accounts? Probably me being a "private" person but nty.

Only VN I've ever played with sound was Once in a Lifetime.
I tried it with some other games and the ambient background music didn't really add much for me.

(they probably shouldn't).
I'm guessing they're counting on flying under the radar. I suspect there isn't a guy in the RIAA playing porn games looking for copyrighted music. That might work for a time. But if they get popular enough, that'll end in a not great way i'm thinking

Music industry is very aggressive with their copyright claims but if you look at livestreaming and for how long that was able to go on I think they're safe. Especially since most "normal" people don't even know WTF an AVN is or that it even exist, let alone that people are making money from it. Also they'd have to go through downloading so i suspect too much of an issue. Some genre of music is fine anyway because they don't give a shit (think of underground music). So I think you're right but how most of these games go (die midway in the story because the DEV just abandons or that the game maybe is already out for a long time) it might be a few years. Or not, you never know with those big companies.

I usually turn off the music before starting any game. The only exception was Leap of Faith, but ironically, after installing the Sanchez Mod, most of it doesn't work anymore, only the absolutely necessary in-game music. :(

I do like have background music when playing but only if it's subtle. Actual singing in the music is too distracting most of the time.

I'm in the same boat.

I like when a game has more unique music. When it feels more like a choice made to add to the scene, not the same 5 royalty-free songs that a lot of VNs grab.

I honestly always turn the music off. I prefer to listen to my own stuff when playing. I usually leave the sound effects on though.

I agree and thankfully it's been done more now.

The music I usually listen to (and like to listen to when doing practically nothing) wouldn't really go well with many AVN (if any) I'm afraid. Sex scenes and blast beats aren't the best combination haha

Oh I've had some hilarious combinations of youtube videos and sex noises.

I like the music if it's good, but it usually isn't. I will usually stick in a single background ambient/mood song that I think fits with the game and used that. I was listening to the runeterra club ox for all of proud father

Just too distracting for me but I can imagine some interesting scenarios you'd encounter
