Depends a bit on the VN. There are some MC models that are really goofy ass looking fucks, so as little of their faces on the screen as possible is nice. Don't put a two foot dick with three inch diameter on them, either - keep the dong within the range of reality unless it's some kind of "beast" VN. As for the back story, some is good, discovering along the ways is fine too. If he's a completely blank slate, that's kind of a bore - he needs to start somewhere, but he doesn't have to be fully fleshed out and having my decisions impact his end-game personality is fine, just not necessary.
I want a good story with likeable LIs and a MC I don't want to drop into the nearest active volcano. For example, if he comes off as some macho gift to all women everywhere and all the panties fall off and puddles start forming on the floor at his slightest glance, not gonna like him. Known too many actual guys that think of themselves that way and they are total douche nozzles on their way to becoming rapists.
