Some games used to have amazing character customization. Like Mass Effect
But lately it seems all you're able to customize is slight features

I never got into character customization. I do my usual skin tone and make em bald. But character creators have gotten worse in a lot a games cause they want more realism so they dial down a lot of the options and make everyone plainer.

Some recent games have pretty in depth character customisation, up to the point where you can use a slider to change most facial features. I used to spend time on character customisation but nowadays I just use a present and change a few things.

If I can't spend 15-20+ minutes (or waaaay more) just fucking with CC features, its not a good character creator in my opinion. Some games have way less options in their pursuit of realism like MichealIsKing! mentioned, and that kind of sucks. I prefer as many features/options/depth as possible, its why I respect things that let you create absolute monstrosities (even if I usually wont make them myself).

we've had basic vanilla customization options for over a decade now (skin tone, face, eyes, hair, thin vs big body parts). but i feel that they have not advanced much beyond that.

Bethesda games tend to have characters that look like ass. But with a good mod or two, you can customize faces and bodies in great detail - down to face structure where you can adjust cheekbones, chin, lips, thighs, tits, ass, etc.
but we can all agree the best character creators are the ones that let you customize your junk 😉 .

I can spend a lot of time in a character creator trying to make a character to my liking. maybe a bit too much time. And i would rather have more customization options than less, but any game outside of an RPG is fine with the basics because i probably won't have much time to look at my characters eyes or tattoos in a shooter like CS.

I can think of "a couple of times" when I decided to play a game that had a character creation screen and spent hours on it, had to start the game the following day because it was so late 😳
